Battle of the Planets: Phoenix Ninjas

Hi all!

It's not exactly news, since we've known about it since it was part of their shareholders meeting back in November, but Corus has finally made their official announcement regarding their BotP reboot, "Battle of the Planets: Phoenix Ninjas." The press release can be found here:

It really doesn't contain much that we didn't already know, but here's the body of the press release:

Nelvana and d-rights Team Up to Reboot ‘Battle of the Planets’

BEYBLADE Partners join Forces to Re-Imagine Global Boys Action Classic

(Toronto, Canada) Corus Entertainment’s Nelvana and d-rights, two key partners behind the global phenomena BEYBLADE, are teaming up again to develop Battle of the Planets: Phoenix Ninjas (tentative title), a re-imagination of the classic Japanese and mega-hit Battle of the Planets. The new series, will be a re-envisioned version of the 1978 hit for a new generation of boys aged 6 to 11.

“We’re thrilled to be working with d-rights on a new version of Battle of the Planets, which has a devoted worldwide fan base,” said Andrew Kerr, Co-Head, Nelvana Enterprises. “This classic property has endured with fans and we are ready to reach out to a new generation of kids. The series will be new, but will feature the same big action stories and compelling characters.”

Battle of the Planets: Phoenix Ninjas has a distinct look and feel that pays tribute to the classic series while ensuring that it works for today’s sophisticated young audiences.

“We are excited to partner with Nelvana to renew this reputable brand," said Daizo Suzuki, President of d-rights Inc. “Battle of the Planets is one of the most well-known Japanese classic animation titles. Originally produced over 40 years ago, it has maintained its popularity until today. We are looking forward to working on its development to add another exciting installment of this evergreen property.”

Battle of the Planets was originally adapted by Sandy Frank Entertainment in 1978 from a Japanese series Gatchaman produced by TATSUNOKO PRODUCTION Co., Ltd. which was released in Japan in 1972. In the original Battle of the Planets, five defenders known as G-Force protect Earth from planet Spectra, home to the villainous masked commander, Zoltar. The team’s ship, The Phoenix, has the ability to transform into a flaming bird-shaped craft able to overcome any attack by functioning as a giant fiery phoenix. A feature film entitled Gatchaman, based on the original Japanese series, was released summer of 2013 in Japan.

Same big action stories and compelling characters...glad to hear that...but wondering what they will do to the characters and stories...
And smh...aimed at boys...not girls, too? Funny...the original series seems to have had an awful lot of girls interested in it. Why would they post such a sexist comment?

While I'd love to see a quality reboot...I am a bit nervous...

Is it possible to overuse the phrase "cautiously optimistic"? At any rate, that's how I still feel about this.

Thanks for the update, James!

I think the "for boys" is marketing and "positioning" speak but yeah, it's hard not to be annoyed by it. Our society is too concerned still with breaking things down for boys and for girls. Tongue

At least at this stage it sounds like it could be okay. I'll hold onto that. Smile

It sounds like exciting news, however I will reserve judgement until the program is released. All I will say is I hope it doesn't get the 'Crowds' treatment.

Heh heh just realized they don't mean Phoenix, AZ! I was thinking, why would they have it set there? Duh!

My son used to be a big fan of Beyblade and I hate t say it was very obnoxious and syrupy. I hope they don't follow that example.

I'll admit, I was amused by the idea that BOTP captured the minds of boys... when the current fan community has far more women than men! I agree, as kids, many boys watched the show, but it seems to have lasted longer (for the most part,. obviously there are exceptions) with the women.

Unless there's some secret male Gatchaman fans club of which I am completely unaware. Oh, James? Care to fill us in on this? Angel1

Seriously though, thanks, James for the latest update!
