Textbooks are Such a Rip-Off

Spring semester starts this coming Monday and my financial aid money dropped today, so I went up to school to get my books. I'm glad that I get to rent them instead of buy them, but it was over $200 to rent my college algebra text and that's new. It was $50 more to buy the thing and I know I won't need to keep a copy. They were out of used and that would have only cost me $100 to rent.

And on top of that, they were out of psychology textbooks, so I may have to go back up there tomorrow to see if it's in. Thankfully I don't have psych 101 until Thursday. I just hope that they don't run out of books.

I feel for ya! When I was raising my oldest grand nephew, he was able to take college courses while in high school....plus I remember all too well what it was like when I was working on my bachelor's -- I had one professor whose "textbooks" were packets he put together at Kinko's. He charged the same rates, but there was no option of getting used, since he made a few changes each semester!

I feel your pain... Thankfully my books aren't quite as expensive as yours but they are all in digital format so no used/rental options since they are in a proprietary format linked to my class login...

OK...this is where I say "I'm glad I finished college already!!!" Smile

Aren't any of the texts available for free on the internet?
Don't laugh -- it's just a question!

Nope. And I checked, too. Oh well.

I've found that there are a lot of professors who are technophobes (or maybe they get a cut from the textbook publishers), so it's hard to find anyone willing to use e-books for their class.

And I thought textbook prices were bad when I had to pay $500 a semester. My son starts this fall, so we'll b feeling that pain soon.

I remember how expensive my engineering textbooks were, ugh. As the classes got more specialized the books got smaller and the prices got bigger. Tongue Sorry to hear it hasn't improved.

I suspect publishers aren't keen on ebooks because of the copying problem.

Engineering textbooks -- that sounds expensive indeed!

At least in the "liberal arts" (I did political science in uni) there are some texts that are off-copyright now (e.g., ancient Greek philosophers, 19th century economists etc) that now would be free online Wink
