Nelvana Announces Battle of the Planets Reboot

Hi all!

http://imissbionix.wordpress.com/2014/11/20/nelvana-set-to-reboot-anime-classic-gatchaman/

The article keeps calling it a Gatchaman reboot, but Nelvana refers to it as "Battle of the Planets," so I assume they know what they're calling it.

"Cautiously optimistic" doesn't quite describe how I feel about this....while I'd love to see the team back on TV, I'm nervous about the "retooled for today's ninja audience" bit. Would they be able to update without losing the heart of the show? I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Thanks for the heads up, James!

I have to admit, this makes me a bit nervous...I know it needs updating...but I'm nervous that it will be nothing like the original. Of course, they have my permission to get rid of Zark...hahaha

As I see above image, I sighed heavily.
In my point of view, above character is not attractive at all.

Sorry but I can't hide my disappointment.

If Tatsunoko want to revive Gatchaman, they must target the adults who grown up watching the old animation.
Character design itself is just perfect as is, Tatsunoko do not need to reinterpret or alter.
Originality should be protected.

I'm really worried that Tatsunoko do not know why Gatchaman became the world's best animation, in both Asia and Western...

I feel like I could write a treatise on this subject....

If above character just defeats his enemies in the whole animation, I will not regard him as Gatchaman.
I'm sorry you might hurt, but I just don't know how to describe my thoughts in gentle manner. If my words are chosen poorly, please forgive me.

no forgiveness necessary, rachel, you have probably stated exactly what the rest of us are thinking too.

I feel I should be more excited about this than I am, it's been something I've been wishing for for a long, long time, but when I saw some of the redesigns of Gatch, (the live action movie, and crowds for example) and other old shows that have been updated for modern audiences, then I can't help but fear they will do the same with BotP, and the show will lose much of the magic that kept me hooked for all that time.

That is, of course, if it eventually is remade and released at all, I have my doubts.

Rachel, you've come closer to expressing some of my feelings than I have. One of the things I'm fearing is that they'll give the team supernatural powers to explain their abilities. That's not part of the team, and it's become extremely clichéd. I'm also afraid that, because the producers may be too focused on targeting a particular audience, the writing quality will be low-quality.

But I'm also hopeful that this reboot will be like Battlestar Galactica *, where the newer series had a richer character development and story line. And while, statistically, that isn't likely, the optimist in me isn't willing to give up yet.

* Yeah, I know that isn't anime, but it's continually held up as proof that it is possible to have a good retooling.

Yes, KT. I agree with you.

Frankly speaking, seeing Gatchaman Movie or Crowds I was really angry at Tatsunoko staffs.
I just can't understand why they underestimate their legacy showing lack of respect to their heroes.

Gatchaman has lots of attractive characters and episodes.
They should focus on these features, not character design alterations.
For example, let's see episode 70 "Death Girls Unite".
http://www.gatchfanfic.com/viewstory.php?sid=1210

In this episode, there are lots of motifs that every man craves for- in all ages, in all countries.

-a lonely hero
-a super car
-pretty girl
-femme fatale
-defeated sexy enemies

You can pick up below points from this episode.

-a boss who always meddles, don't trust you.
-uncomfortable feelings watching conflicting colleagues.
-betrayed "MAN's Romentic"
-payment for taking the devil's hand
-gore scenes of mummified human body

Mannequin designs as above would attract adults.
They moves like elegant ballerinas or antique marionettes, not in a sluttish way.
And a muscular young man overpowers delicate female bodies.
If a newly introduced hero does this, it would not be that impressive, but it's Ken and Joe! Heroes of my childhood!, my first love! This is your legacy, Tatsunoko!!

Ha.......
If they didn't blow up 80 million dollars for Gatchaman Movie, I think extremely high quality animation series could have launched enough.

Gatchaman adult version can be a hot issue itself, there are lots of another issues to develop.
For example,(though it is just my wish) design collaborations with famous car designers or intentional noise marketing like "Japan Media Rating Board disapproved Gatchaman Reboot".

EW, That's the point!
Gatchaman characters are not typical perfect heroes.
It makes them more realistic, more comprehensible.

This reminds me a bit of the comics back in early 2001. It was called BotP and used their names, but the story-line was clearly Gatch.

There is Gatchaman and there is BotP. Very different story-lines. This company obviously doesn't know that or doesn't recognize the significance since they used both titles when discussing it in the article. You can't market Gatch in the US as BotP with Ken, Joe, etc. You can't market BotP in the east with Mark, Jason, etc. It can only be one or the other.

Unless they plan to have multiple voice tracks for the different audiences to hit both.

I wonder whether it would be possible to contact the producers and make our views known? There are people in this fandom who know more about Gatch and BoTP than any newcomer producer would ever know -- maybe we should get James, and Jason Hofius, to speak to them? To prevent this disaster-in-the-making?

As EW said, the Battlestar Galactica reboot shows that you can have it both ways: attract the ones who watched it as kids, and attract new viewers. It took me some time to get used to Starbuck being a girl, but once this was done, I loved the new arc.

So please, Nelvana, don't destroy BoTP for a new generation!

I am cautiously optimistic, but my biggest fear is that this, like many other Gatchaman/BOTP projects we have heard about, will never see the light of day. I think it's far too soon to be down on the adaptation itself, since we essentially know nothing about it.

he artwork is definitely different, but there is an obvious recognizability factor, which is key for me. Mark's face especially is very familiar.

I just have to wonder why the knee pads and shoulder blades are so big?

Good question. His hands also look like claws - could be the uniform. I don't feel I can call it a birdstyle.
