Hidalgo

Woooh! I *really* liked this one. It isn't entirely realistic (it idealizes a few things), but it is a really entertaining movie. I thought that the action was great, as well as the plot. And of course there is the abundance of horses for horse enthusiasts.

Anyways, I really recommend it. It's exciting, funny, and all in all a good movie.

Well, if you can ignore the horse's eyes, yep, a good movie.

Vigo Morgenstern (Aragorn). Can't possibly go wrong.

Yeah, he actually bought the main horse that portrayed Hidalgo (6 took turns). It isn't very accurate, but if I want accuracy, I'll watch the news...and then try to figure out from there what is actually the truth. After all, news and history are told by the winners. But, all in all it's enjoyable. Don't have to think through convoluted plot lines, rather, you just watch and let yourself be entertained for a while.

Nah, baby, other than lots of sand and an Arabic backdrop, not even close to the Mummy!

I loved the movie, though as a horse person, I'm curious whatcha meant, Cricket, by ignoring the horse's eyes? For a second I had to rethink the horse because I thought, was he a splash overo with blue eyes or something? But nah, he wasn't. I'm Just curious!

My only minor problem with the movie was that whole willing suspension of disbelief scene in the desert where Hopkins (Vigo) has the vision come to him. It wasn't the vision, but how the horse responded after the vision and through the rest of the movie. Considering everything that came before, I was so distracted chewing on the credibility of that whole thing, I kind of fell out of my shut up and enjoy the movie frame of mind. (I won't give more scene detail in case some haven't seen it and want to do so.) It is really a minor thing, and only bugs me because of my growing up experience with horses.

I pretty much agree with ER's assessment of the movie as well.

I found the eye expressions a bit much. The rest of the horse's body language was nice -- very slightly over the top. But when he rolled his eyes, that was pushing it too far.

Then again, I often have problems suspending my disbelief at movies these days. Maybe because I'm looking at them as a writer and critic rather than just enjoying them? Maybe I've got too many other things going on? Whatever the reason, not being able to suspend it high enough really sucks.

The rest of the movie was good.
