Lap top died...

After some skittish occurances, it appears my hard drive took a nosedive during a software upgrade. Hopefully the backups to the desktop are okay, and all my stories, novels, etc. are intact.

While it is in repairs, I've got the big ole clunky desktop at my disposal, so not sure how much new writing is going to be getting done in the meantime.

Can't believe the dust on my husband's desk....hee hee, Swiffer to the rescue!

That's how I discovered the importance of doing backups!

How's the Swiffer going?

Hug K2, at least you're still with us.... hope it can be fixed soon.

My condolences K2.

I have learned the hard way, to try and remember to do regular backups. I say, try to remember, because I do not always do it weekly, like I really want to, but at least I do it monthly those times I do get busy and forget for a few weeks.

Switching computers can be nerve wracking. I learned the hard way, not to just do frequent backups, and I still don't do it as often as I should, but do keep my most important files on usb drives.

If I relied on memory to do backups I'd be really screwed. There's software out there for doing it automatically. Mac users can use Time Machine (have it go to an external drive), not sure what's the best options out there for Windows users. I have Scrivener set up as well to back up all of my stories to Dropbox whenever I edit them. Dropbox is essentially an Internet hard drive ("cloud" stuff) that keeps a copy of whatever you have in a specific directory on your computer, and vice versa.

Dropbox offers free space which you can pay to expand, and will give you more if you invite other people to use the service. If anyone doesn't have a Dropbox account and wants to sign up, I'll be happy to send you an invite Wink, or I'm sure someone else here would as well.

Sorry to hear about your laptop woes, k2. As you know, I'm quite empathetic. I finally have my newer one fixed and am no longer stuck on the old one!

If it's just a dead hard drive then that should be a simpler repair, at least, than mine was. Whether you can get the files off the old drive is a good question. Hopefully you can, or at least your backups were solid!

Chris, the problem with Time Machine and Mac laptops is remembering to plug the laptop into the external drive and then to turn on Time Machine every day/ night so that it does the back up.

Which is why I try to make myself remember to plug it in once a week, usually on Sunday evenings so that I am all prepared for the new week at work. On that night I take my computer to my "office" room in the house, since I do not want the external drive sitting around cluttering up the main living room where I use my laptop all the time.

I have my external hard drive plugged into my Mac al the time. It uses Time Machine a couple of times a day.

The one where I was nearly SOL was this site... my 'Had To Get This OPut' posts were only here, and nowhere else! I've since copied them all into a Word file. Phew!

I hope you're able to recover everything, K2P2!

Hubby's heading out right now to pick it up! He backed the laptop up to the desktop's drive before running the update, so we ae hoping all the pertinent info got saved properly.

We shall see later on tonight if I am back in business. The desktop is an old Apple G-5, and while it works fine with both the Gatch sites, anywhere else is pretty much a bust.

Fingers crossed..but not to stressed if I'd lost anything. More worried about my daughter's music collection.

BACK!

Everything restored nicely, although I just, myself, deleted something that I should not have and will have to retrieve it.

Whew. What is nice to know is that I have plenty of memory left, I've not even scratched the surface, which is one of my worries, since I have a hard enough time deleting stuff.

Thanks for all the encouragement guys..now to see what Iona and Ryu have been up to.

Yay k2!!

jublke: I think not worrying that your files are lost forever is probably worth a little clutter downstairs. Smile My laptop rarely moves (I know, that's odd) so it's almost always plugged in to the external drive and I leave Time Machine on all the time.
