URGENT: Congress wants to shutdown Youtube and make it a felon to stream

Copied and pasted from another forum:

A good video explanation of what is going on, although a bit long:

A clear explanation of what congress is rushing to pass:

Quote
A bit of an emergency: The rumor all over Capitol Hill is that the House version of the Internet Blacklist Bill will be introduced this week, probably on Wednesday.

Our allies on the Hill say the bill's so bad that it could effectively destroy Youtube, Twitter, and other sites that rely on user-generated content by making the sites' owners legally responsible for everything their users post.

Nobody will want to take that risk, so sites like Youtube and Twitter could be forced to shut down.

Facebook, Myspace, and Google+ would be at risk. The cyberlocker and streaming provisions could affect your iPhone, Android, AmazonCloud, Pandora, Grooveshark and even your email accounts.

It also includes provisions that would make it a felony to stream unlicensed content -- including cover band performances, karaoke videos, video game play-throughs, and more.

And all of this is being driven by a few major corporations who are trying to protect their private profits.

Will you use the form at right to ask your Congressmember not to cosponsor the legislation, at least until they've heard our concerns?

ALSO: We need to completely overwhelm the social networking sites with info about this legislation so we can bombard Congress with constituent contacts:

First, chill out and breathe. Worse case scenario, if it gets passed, the companies will get overseas server space and continue business as usual. A US law cannot be applied in other countries except on US territory, like embassies. Meanwhile, the case(s) will be winding their way through the courts, and the law will, in all likelihood, be struck down for being too vague, unconstitutional, or both.

But since this bill would tick off many many many large wealthy companies, it's unlikely to happen -unless the politicos who vote for it want to lose their contributions from said wealthy companies. Never mind losing votes from the constituents who don't like their personal convenience being threatened.

Also, please remember we US folk are headed into an election year. Mudslinging and blamethrowing will abound. From the amount of hype, and very little hard fact, I found when researching this bill and the associated actions, it looks like it's already started.

And, just saying, look up the history of Demand Progress, their website, and the people who run it, especially the guy in charge. Really. Reliable sources start with the people behind them. And reliability does not seem much in evidence here.

Candi I hope you're right!

The whole idea of the internet will be threatened if the bill that AllentownDarkWater mentions is passed! In Europe, it's becoming increasingly dangerous to download content, and at least until now, streaming was safe. I'm sure YouTube and the other sites will find a way to circumvent such a law, if it is passed, but it's definitely a step in the wrong direction. I'm also scared! KEEP THE NET FREE!

Allen, please check junk or spam like this on Snopes or Factcheck before trying to spread the paranoia.

And Candi's right, there are too many that would fight this tooth and nail (besides maybe Comcast and satellite TV). This would be tied up in court for violating the first amendment for years.

The others are right. There is no way this bill can pass in its current form. Too much money is at stake for too many corporations.

BTW, I think Google owns YouTube. Google took on China. Google is the platform for most of the computer systems in Washington , DC. They could shut down the government if they wanted to. Even if they didn't own YouTube.

Google does own youtube and according to an article that I read earlier today, they are supposedly hiring hollywood/entertainment insiders to create original programming.

The only thing Congress can legally do is impose tougher sanctions on copyright violations, which would be passed on to those who use the services.

Maybe we need to get Google in the Occupy movement.

The Occupy Movement brought to you by Google. Given in or will shut you down and still make a killing because we aren't bankers, brokers, lawyers, or politicians. Shhh! Don't tell we are part of the 1%. Wink

I believe this whole thing stems from child pornography being posted on the internet and child abuse via internet stalking by pedophiles.

I don't see any way the law can be passed due to the fact the internet is global. We can't tell other countries what to do anymore than they can tell us.

They need to make crimes against children Federal crimes with life in prison with no chance of parole as the price. You kill a child during any of these crimes, automatic death sentence. Those kinds of people have no right to be in society.

I'll get off my soapbox now.

Well said!

The only exception I might make to this is for young offenders who are repeating what they have learned by others abusing them. The second generation offenders, if in late teens/early adulthood, with a lot of therapy may have a chance. Their sentence needs to be in a facility that is designed to help them, and any parole they may earn needs to include lifetime counseling and monitoring.

Anyone over the age of 25 should no longer be considered a second-gen offender, because their pysche is now set, and their possibilities for being "cured" are extremely low; while the possibilities for repeating the patterns are extremely high. By this age, the only thing that will really change someone to the degree necessary for something like this is a traumatic experience, injury or illness.
