Another Hurricane

Whatever you did to prepare for Irene, don't take it down yet. There's another one, and last I heard, they're still tracking it.

Anyone care to join me in hoping it fizzles out?

If you are talking about Lee, it is heading towards Louisiana and is just a tropical storm at the moment.

I've got every conceivable appendage crossed that it will, UW! The last thing anyone still dealing with Irene needs is another threat heading their way.

Considering we are only beginning the hurricane season, I expect a few more either hurricanes or Tropical storms to hit the coast. It would be unusual if they didn't.

I tend to track hurricanes/tropical storms/depressions to see if they will track over the southern Caribbean islands where my parents boat is located.

Katia. For the East Coast people, that's the new one.

Katia's been out there a couple of days, but it's still so far out, they can't pin down its path completely. It does look, though, as if its headed to the east coast again.

As Cloud said, its that time of year. We were due for some hits.

Katia, keeps tracking West instead of swinging North like they think it is going to. So yes indeed, it looks like the East coast will get hit again towards the end of next week or into the following one. But not before T.S. Lee hits New Orleans.

Poor Louisianna is getting drowned by Lee. They're saying some areas may get as much as 20 inches of rain because it is moving so slow.

And its going to track up to the northeast. We've already been told to expect 2-6 inches of rain between Monday and Thursday.

It's a shame it didn't go into Texas. They've had a horrible drought this year. They could use the rain.

Only I don't think ANYone could use 10-15 inches of rain in one fall. No matter how much of a drought you have been in.

BTW: best of luck with this storm heading your way Becky.

Like UW said, I'm still prepared from Irene. I'm just afraid its going to screw up my son's football scrimmage Tuesday night and first game Thursday night.

When my older brothers played high school football, they only stopped or cancelled due to lightening. Today, the insurance companies hold the purse-strings and make them cancel if there's too much rain (I don't know what they consider too much rain).

My brothers used to tell stories od nearly drowning on the fields during pile ups because there was several inches of water there and worms everywhere.

I can't speak for youth football, but for baseball (which is not usually played in the rain because the balls get too heavy and leads to arm injuries), too much rain is when the field is too wet for play to continue safely. I.e, (for baseball, the ball is getting too wet), the turf (grass or dirt), is too slick, and putting players at risk of injury.

Many of us joke about the times when we were kids and we were allowed to do many things that we aren't now. Many times I agree with that. However, if you happen to be that one kid in a hundred or a thousand that gets the critical injury in the rain (or anything) and you lose a season or more because something wasn't safe enough, is it really so silly? Injuries that can affect a season or more can happen to any athlete at any age or level, do we really want to increase that risk for kids because youth sports no longer have time for rainouts?

Please, don't misinterpret, I'd be one of the first to say, it's only a little drizzle and the kids won't melt. And I've been at games where, I've told the coach that I'm sitting in the car to keep score so that the book is legible. So I understand the competitive nature of we need to get the game in at all costs, but it doesn't hurt to step back once in a while and wonder, what the costs are.

Hope the current systems come through weaker than they are, and Becky, I hope they don't affect the games. Does the school have a freshman squad that plays Thursday with JV and Varsity on Friday? So many of our games out here are being moved to Satuday afternoon because of night time problems in some areas. Of course, we also don't have a lot of schools out here with Freshman squads, they are kind of hit and miss. The urban areas seem about 50/50 and the rural areas are even less than that.

Yeah, the freshman will be playing Thursday and the JV/Varsity Friday. The freshman have to attend the Varsity game because they have the joy of cleaning up the stadium afterwards.

It just seems things were so much simpler when we were kids.

That's true! We had fewer laws to protect us from our own stupidity. We don't interfere with natural selection in other species and do allow population control, so why don't we allow it for our own?

Of course, I think some of it, too, was just kids being kids and not having to worry the way we do as adults.

Back on track, it looks like they still don't know what Katia will do, that or the damn thing can't make up its mind, either.

They keep saying its going to turn north and stay out to sea. I have my doubts.

The flooding in Louisianna and Mississippi has been bad with Lee. They were saying one location had gotten 17 inches of rain.

I suspect Lee is what will push it out to sea, Becky. At least that is my hope for you and everyone else who was impacted by Irene.

It was completely shoved off its foundation. They'll have to demolish it, then see if the foundation is still good enough to build on.

Some flooding in Pennsylvania so far. and at least another 12-24 hours more of rain. We've been in a lull the past two hours, but it won't last.
