Oddities...

Hi All,

Thought I'd set up a new thread to discuss the various whimsical components, inconsistencies, or whatever you want to call it, of our favorite anime (Gatchaman, BOTP, OAV, G-Force, etc.).

In the last thread, Cricket mentioned how it was funny that the BOTP team members, though supposedly having secret identities, refer to each other by their real names while in costume and I commented on how in their civilian dress they go about in their numbered t-shirts as if nobody else will pick up on it. Love it.
Big Grin

Also, and I know I'm talking to a better versed group on the details than I, but I always get a laugh (aside from the 70's ultra-fashion) how both Gatchaman and Galactor with such advanced technology still have to transcribe secret documents that look like ticker tape. In a few episodes it looks like the documents are being held on a beta vhs or 8-track tape.

Then there's the part that, at least for Gatchaman, Sosai X wants to punish humanity for messing up the earth's environment, yet the tactics that Galactor uses most often doesn't exactly look that ecologically sound either. Go figure. I love it anyway.

What are some other funny ones you notice?

I love that inconsistency on the names. It seems to haunt most "secret identity" shows.

Watch! When I put on this tiara, you can't tell it's me! Queen <---Most definitely not Elvin because Elvin doesn't wear tiaras!

Because goodness knows that Usagi looks nothing like Sailor Moon. ^_~ At least our team has masks.

True, cool outfits will make you forget everything.

There was one episode, maybe you guys know, where Ken, Joe, and Ryu get trapped by Galactor inside of a glass-like tube and spun around and are left nausious. The same episode they use that whirlwind techique where they're on top of each others shoulders to escape the Galactor enslaught. Maybe it's just me, but wouldn't it be just as dizzying? Confused

Posted by meridianday on 14-10-2004 at 05:20:

I can excuse that one as a different kind of dizzy Wink

In the tube, they're spun around and pressed against the inside of the tube, they have no control over what's happening. During whirlwind formation, they're doing what they've been trained to do and have full control over it.

It's like watching a trained ballerina pirouette for ages, she can spin for so long purposefully because she knows to keep looking at one reference point to avoid getting dizzy. But put her in a glass tube and spin her round and she doesn't stand a chance. As a Devil Star, I know these things.

Meridian is the font of all knowledge when it comes to these things and usually comes up with the answers

There's definitely a difference. It's kind of like me fish-tailing my truck, on purpose, in a dirt-covered empty parking lot versus me losing control on a highway. Both involve the truck swerving, but one is good and the other is bad. Yes.

Meridian is very smart. I wish I were half as smart as Meridian. ^_^

Excellent observation Meridian. I guess part of my thinking was that since the Gatcha team are ninjas, they'd be able to handle that sort of thing. Good thing you are a Devil Star!

So, does anybody else have anything to contribute in terms of favorite quirks or character quotes on the show? Kind of like those sites where people post the inconsistencies or errors in movies like the "Lord Of The Rings" trilogy, just for kicks I think it might be fun to take a look at the episodes/scenes after people point them out.

Race against Disaster, Jason and Lucy wear different clothes, but, regardless of who is driving, they show the same foot. I think there's an issue with the side the wheel is on, too -- it changes.

The same glove, I think it's Tiny's, is always the one to pull the lever to go to the Firey Phoenix. But the dialogue attributes it to Mark and Tiny and I think even Jason gets to pull it once.

Alright! I'll have to check those out. Big Grin

I've always been impressed with the way that, whenever there is some peril threatening the team, that they all take it in turns to gasp in shock. Very disciplined, not all rushing to react at once and crowd each other out Wink Unless they're all in shot at the same time, of course.

grin .. it's not an inconsistency per se, but it always gives me a laugh when the mecha appears/lands/waves tentacles at the Phoenix, and Jun gasps and hides her eyes.

i mean, just what training did they GIVE the girl?

" Don't worry sweetheart, we don't expect you to have to fight the nasty old Galactor, you're just in charge of morale on the bridge!"

...and the puppy episode! can't forget the wonderful and amazing Gatchascience displayed in that one! Chunks of shrapnel the size of my fist coming out of Joe's head... jeez.

and there's one episode with the Magma Giant (can't remember the exact subtitle) where the team has to get out of the way of something rolling through a tunnel - so they leap up and spread eagle on the wall.

except there's nothing holding them up! i mean, nani? they have velcro on the backs of their wings?

But they can stick themselves to walls at will because of their Kagaku Ninpo Gecko manoeuvre! They have such control over their bodies that they can cause their body hairs to come out through their birdstyles, and split into multitudinous sections so tiny that they practically bond on a molecular level with the wall.

Puppy episode though, what were Tatsunoko thinking? Although the original ep isn't quite as bad as the G-Force version...

I always liked the way that Nambu was so calm and collected and professional and focussed in a crisis as long as somebody was around. And then as soon as he's on his own, he's tearing his hair out with stress.

Okay, not as sugoi as the ones you folks have come up with, but I just watched "The Ghost Fleet from Hell" episode. There's a scene where Ken is calling Dr. Nambu to ask permission for Joe to use the missles aboard the God Phoenix, but he's using his wrist communicator. Other times and usually they're communicating to Dr. Nambu over the monitor on the ship. Maybe this could be justified by having to use a different frequency too keep Galactor from intercepting messages...but still...

Jinpei and Jun are always falling all over the place aboard the God Phoenix when sudden evasive maneuvers are made. Don't they ever put on seatbelts? Or do they even have any on that ship?

Posted by CricketBeautiful on 21-10-2004 at 16:50:

Seatbelts? On ships?

There's a grand tradition of not having them -- goes right back to the original Star Trek.

Couldn't mess with tradition, could they?

its good to to see that it doesn't matter how a show is put together, film or anime, continuity will always be a problem.

its funny after watching the extent to which care is taken to ensure continuity that these things still happen, hell they even watch for it in post production but they still sneak through.

i think i must be blind to most coz the show i probably know the most, BtVS about suffered from it badly, notably different coloured clothing buti never noticed it happen without it being pointed out. Tongue

ROTFLMAO!!

Best damned fistthumping bellylaugh inducing thread ive read in a loooong while! I love it!

and AHEM...but can someone PLEEEASE tell me how Nambu's/Anderson's amazing glasses manage to stay on his face?

And why is it in every BOTP episode, where the team have to warp speed to some outlandish new planet in peril, it just happens to always look like the same ??
