Has anyone else

went to visit the Mailing List and Julieann's fic site last night , and while I was searching it my computer got some ad or such that wouldn't let me look at anything else, this happened even after having my computer turned off all night, and unhooked from the internet ... it kept popping up trying to get me to buy their product. It even continued while I was doing one of my games offline.. very frustrating and it caused me to reboot my entire computer today... thank goodness for portable memory sticks Biglaugh1

I just wonder if anyone else has had that happen, cause now I'm apprehensive of going there, even if there are some awesome fics to read...

Julieann if you see this, please help with any info you might have... maybe it was only a fluke (I certainly hope so)

That sounds very much like a virus my computer had...it probably has nothing to do with Julieann's site...

I had to get a pro to clean the virus for me...

I've seen a few sites with obnoxious Flash ads that cover up everything to try and get you to click on them. You have to look very carefully to find the close button, and occasionally there isn't one. I find that if you close your browser, reopen and don't go back to the site that gave you probems, it's generally gone.

It shouldn't be from the archive. The mailing list being powered by yahoo is a different story, but that too is relatively low risk.

What's the URL for the site? I want to see if I've been there or not just in case.

Which site are you looking for Allen?

The fanfic archives is at: http://www.gatchfanfic.com/

If that is what you are looking for. The Mailing List? I gather you have to be a member of yahoo groups to be on it.

I do remember going there at least ONCE. Oh crap. I hope I don't have that damn thing.

I've never had this sort of thing occur while on gatchfanfic, and I'm a frequent flier there. Juliann's been overhauling the site to block spammers on its message boards, which had been an issue there for some months now.

Until yesterday, I've never encountered such a problem, over at Gatchfanfic, either! I don't think it could be something connected to the site itself, though!

Gatchfanfic.com doesn't have popup ads. It doesn't have any ads at all, does it?

No ads. I've never seen any there. Not had any trouble with it.

gatchgirl, having worked with efiction for nearly ten years, I can give a 97% guarantee that the virus or whatever your computer caught did not come from the archive. The only way I know of to transmit a virus from an archive like that is through ads, which Julieann does not have, or to have someone upload it into a story via an image. Since all submissions are screened, most likely something carrying something that could infect others would be caught during the screening process.

Sorry to hear about the virus problem. I hope you can get it fixed.

There are no ads or pop-ups at the archive that could have done this. The only people who can automatically post fanfic without screening are those who have been in the account for years. Even then, I try to keep an eye on things to make sure an account doesn't get hijacked.

Not only is it now harder to sign up at the archive with the new captcha, but I also screen all new accounts against two spam listing sites. So, there shouldn't be any problems with the forum, either.

If anyone finds a page that has anything more than a age warning for a mature story, please let me know.

The only one problem I have with Gatchfanfic is the message «An Error Has Occurred! That username does not exist», although I registered a long time ago and write username and e-mail correctly.
I think, the site has come to hate my taciturn account and decided to kill it Elfgrin2

Send me a note privately with your email address and I can look into your account. Some of the accounts were lost in this last cleanup.

Thanks Julieann for replying to this post... I will try again in my next streak of days off, that way I can "fix" anything that might happen before my B/H gets home.... your site really is a great one, thanks for having it

Sounds more like you have something installed (malware) or more likely a virus.

I'd recommend getting ESET.

Wikipedia's entry on ESET
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESET

This is probably the most relevant part of the article

quote:

ESET's products are regularly tested by organizations such as AV-Comparatives, AV-Test and Virus Bulletin. ESET is the first company to receive 54 VB100 awards from Virus Bulletin[citation needed] and has not missed a single threat in Virus Bulletin's tests in the past six years.[16] ESET's products are regularly certified by ICSA Labs and West Coast Labs.
