Gatchaman Reruns on Japanese TV

Hi all!

Just so you'll know, both Gatchaman and Gatchaman Fighter are currently being shown as reruns on Japanese satellite channels. Gatchaman is being shown remastered in HD on the Cartoon Network and Gatchaman Fighter is being shown on the Fuji TV One satellite channel. In case anyone cares to look at them, both networks have created web pages for the shows.

The Cartoon Network page for Gatchaman can be found here:

http://www.cartoon.co.jp/cn_programs/view/00043

The Fuji TV One page for Gatchaman Fighter can be found here:

http://www.fujitv.co.jp/otn/b_hp/910200140.html

They're not much to look at, but it's nice to know they're there.

James

Thank you James. Now if only they could return to American TV.

BTW: I seem to have problems with the second link in Safari, but it does seem to work in Firefox. Lets see if any other Mac users experience this problem.

Oohhhhh!!! Lucky! Lucky lucky lucky!

I TOTALLY agree with ladygalactor about those stupid shows. The only show coming out of CN lately that I've liked is the Ben 10 series. And I'm starting to think they're beating that into the ground.

If you wiki Cartoon Network, you'll see that each country has its own version.

The last time U.S Cartoon Network aired "G-Force' in a regular capacity was mid 1997; they briefly brought it back as a filler show between January - March 2000, after which they canned it again. It hasn't aired on mainstream TV again, to this day. "The Anime Network", which belonged to the defunct ADV, briefly aired "G-Force" on it's defunct linear channel and in some of their VOD lineups, around 2004ish. Unfortunately, by the time I got Anime Network's VOD channel around my parts (Fall '05), "G-Force" had long disappeared from the channel.

As a lot of us should remember, CN sister station Boomerang briefly brought back BotP to U.S airwaves between April-September 2004. Only the first 20 episodes were aired, and later re-run. The show moved to the Anime Network the following month, mostly replacing "G-Force" on their line-ups and airing up until the time ADV began their Gatch releases. Select episodes of ADV Gatchaman (the first 12 I believe) also made it into AN's VOD channels later on.

U.S Cartoon Network has changed greatly over the last 15 years, which is natural, seeing as all cable channels change at one point or another, to compete and remian relevant. Their long-running action block, "Toonami" was canceled back in 2008, and ever since then the channel had been averse to any and all kinds of anime, much more nearly 40-year old shows like Gatchaman. So yeah, CN varies a lot in the different countries it's in, but at least the CN franchise has the distinction of airing all 3 versions of Gatchaman!

And forget about Boomerang too. BotP tanked on the channel, which may be why more episodes weren't aired, and why the show was moved to Anime Network. That really was the last big acquisition for Boomerang, in which the execs prefer to re-run the shows already in Turner's vast (yet tiresome) library. The channel's ad-free so they make little profits, and has seriously stagnated with the same old programming, so no hope there as well.

We only have our DVDs, old recordings and YouTube to turn too people. Forget about CN, we're WAY past their target demo! Try Adult Swim. Smile

Thanks for the links, James!

For the heck of it, I ran them through Google translate. Heh, who knew that Joe was a "nihilist grandstander," or that Galactor is also known as "Gyarakuta"?

'Southern Doctor'? An exact translation from the Japanese for Nambu Hakushi!

This is why 'translation programs' will be inadequate for years to come.

So Jun's last name is Shiratori! And Jinpei's last name is Tsubame! And I didn't know Leader X was really Mr. X.

The reason why they only aired that small selection of episodes was because those were the only episodes that had been remastered from the 1" reel to reel tapes that Sandy Frank had archived.

That's the phonetic transliteration of the way Gallactor is spelled in Katakana.

No, they're not. Shiratori is one of the Japanese words for "Swan" (The more common form is "Hakucho," but Jun used "Shiratori") and "Tsubame" is one of the Japanese words for Swallow (Another is "Tsubakuro," which is what Jinpei use).

At the time of the Boomerang airing, me and several others also believed that the reason only 20 eps aired was because those were close to the amount available on U.S DVD at the time (believe it was 24 before that last 2-disc boxset, released alongside "The Best of "G-Force" in Fall 2004.......man, they didn't even complete BotP here in the U.S). I'd heard talk of the prints being remastered, and also re-collections from those who saw the show towards the end of it's syndicated run of the episodes being in horrible quality.

What's the deal exactly with BotP's prints? Were the prints poorly preserved or damaged, or was it simply age that wore them down? I think one of the reasons why GoS's prints have held up better is because it was produced on tape, according to a convo I had with Jason. But I find that it's eps look softer and less detailed, kinda VHS-y. The prints for the early pilots (produced on film) definitely look crappy though.

Thanks for the links, James, and for your Google translation, LB!

Crying5 I so wish I could have been able to watch Japanese satellite channels!!! I've tried to find them again knowing, from the start, that the effort would have been all in vain!!

That was exactly it. The episodes that had been prepared by Rhino (The first 24 BotP episodes and Invasion of Space Center) were the only epiosdes that were used on Boomerang because they were the only episodes on something other than 1" masters. Neither Boomerang nor Sandy Frank were going to spend any money preparing additional episodes, so those were all they had to air.

No, the original film prints actually look very, very good. I have film prints for most of the series, and the vibrancy and clarity can be stunning. The problem with the BotP episodes released onto DVD is that they were remastered from the 1" tape masters that Sandy Frank had produced and archived in the 1980s. This set was done with little care for quality control, hence the fuzzyness of the video as well as all the visible imperfections that came from the well worn syndication prints that were used. Heck, the Zark sequence in the middle of "Siege of the Squids" isn't even the correct one! It was taken from "Raid of the Space Octopus!"

What the series really needed was to be completely remastered directly from film prints, but that cost money that Sandy Frank wasn't going to spend.

Yes, G-Force was produced from Beta SP masters. There are no "prints" to speak of for G-Force, only videotape masters.

Thanks for the info and the links James. Yet another reason why I would love to go to Japan!

LB, those translations are hysterical! I love that Ken has a "burning hot heart of justice." Nice.

CloudD - I'm using safari and the links seem to work okay for me. They work on firefox, too.

Hi all!

Less mechanically translated, that sentence should read more along the lines of, "Burning with the heart of hot justice, he is the Leader of the Science Ninja Team." More colloquially and less literally, it should be along the lines of, "His heart burning with a passion for justice, he is the Leader of the Science Ninja Team." Translation programs can be helpful tools, but you still need a human looking at the original to properly edit what they come up with.

I noticed that little thing when I did my review of 'Siege of the Squids' off the Veoh site. Zark's talking about problems with the Phoenix, when there weren't any.

Ohhhhh, but James, sometimes it is much more fun to take the literal translation. If we didn't then we would have nothing to laugh at or complain about. Big Grin

Thank you though for the more colloquial translation though.
