--- Windows 7 ? (http://www.gatchamania.net/threadid.php?threadid=3176)
Windows 7 ?
While I save money for a new computer I'm working on a borrow laptop with Windows 7, which I'm still learning.
I changed the screen saver settings the other day and noticed that every time the screen saver clicked on, the Wi-Fi would disconnect.
Short of changing things so that the computer just goes into a sleep mode instead of using the screen saver (what the default settings seemed to do), is there anything I can do to prevent this?

I got a computer a couple months ago that's Windows 7 and uses wi-fi, but I never changed the default settings (it sleeps rather than uses a screen saver) and it doesn't lose its connection when it sleeps (or if it does, it reconnects very quickly upon "waking up"). I'm no expert, but a glance through some computer forums, though, leads me to think it might have something to do with how your power options are set up.
control panel > hardware and sound > power options
My computer's currently set for the "power saver" option, but maybe if you set yours to "high performance", or tweak the advanced settings in the "balanced" or "power saver" options, it will keep everything running when your computer reverts to screensaver mode.
Or, maybe it's got something to with the settings on whatever firewall you're using?
I'm not much help -hopefully there's someone around here who knows more about this than me!
Thanks LB! I might have to do that, revert back to the default; I tweaked the power settings to reflect my usage and that's when the problem started. At least I figured out the problem after two frustrating days of being kicked off and will no what not to do when I get my new computer. Likely a month away.
My brother will be home by then; hopefully they have the brand and model at the BX and I can get it duty free. (I know I shouldn't take advantage of that, I usually don't except when I'm spending enough money that it that not paying sales tax is worth it.)

Yeah I believe it's a Power Saving option. If changing your Power Settings doesn't help, find your Wireless Adapter under Network Devices in your Device Manager (you should find it easily in Windows 7 if you do a search from the Start menu) And there's a Power Saving option you can change their too.
Hope it helps
Thanks Cain! I'll see if I can find that!

Mine only disconnects when I close the laptop lid and put it into hibernation and then re-connects when I wake it up again.
I am actually enjoying Windows 7 - after getting used to it.
I must admit that that taskbar thingie of theirs makes it possible to keep my desktop really clean - and so enjoy the vision of a certain Condor and Eagle that is my background pic much more fun to see!

Thank you to everyone that tried to help, but I think the problem is with the new modem and not the computer. Absolutely no issues while at my mom's or while at Starbucks. Ironically, no issues when I got hom last night.
I'm thinking that there might be another modem nearby that maybe interfering with the communication between the modem and the computer since it happens so sporadically. Just not sure what to do about that.

If your on WiFi its a router not a modem
If you think its another router interfering try changing the Wifi channel on the router and your machine to a different number.

Amethyst, I'm on wifi and every time a plane flies over it causes problems...
And I live on the flight path....

Funnily enough, with all the problems I've had over the past 2 weeks, when I got re-connected, then I had to delete the current wi-fi settings and re-load them to get it to re-connect wirelessly to the internet
