I just can't believe
that 10 or 12 people from this board couldn't get together maybe once a year (oh.... let's say maybe at some ComicCon ) and do their own voice-overs on an episode or two each year of Gatchaman II and so on? Practice a time or two and just voice-over has you read the subtitles. Posted it on YouTube or even have it as a 'Gatchamania exclusive'. I'm sick of all this crying. Make this happen. This could.... NO, this should be the event that makes the event every year. We have the technogoly. We can rebuild it (Oh wait, wrong show) Organize. Fantasize. Realize. Why hasn't this been done? If they are not going to give it to us, then let's make it OURSELVES!!! Who needs a big production company anymore? Heck, I'm so wound up I'm ready to grab all the neighborhood kids and start having them learn their lines. "Hey kid, you want to be the Condor?"

Great idea, Wade - so you can translate Japanese?

There isn't any Gatchaman II or Fighter translations or subtitles to English anywhere on this planet? Really? Seriously? Noone has even attempted? Lots a lot of extra work I wasn't expecting, but tell me it can't be done and you may be right.....
How about this, my screenname is WadeInLincoln as in University of Nebraska/Lincoln. Where a decent number of the 35,000 students are either learning Japanese or are students from Japan. How about putting an add in the college paper for a Japanese translator. SERIOUSLY, noone has tried this before??? Chances are that maybe they could do a little translating for a paper or a grade even. Problem being that 2nd semester ends near the beginning of May so Finals are coming soon. Of course a lot of the Japanese students (good kids by the way) do not take the Summer Break and keep on with there summer classes instead.
Take a little time and work translating all 105 episodes but if we're only talking a couple episodes to start.... could it really be that difficult???
Seriously there is no English translations anywhere???

There are only a few fan translations out there and so far I haven't come across any to really compare, but I can give you a couple of reasons why it's a lot harder than just 'go for it'.
The problem that you're dealing with is the nuances - you need to have an exceptional understanding of both languages to get it right (there's also a lot of technical talk in Gatchaman). In other words, you need a professional translator with a good knowledge of the series.
I can tell you that even in the professionally subbed and dubbed Series One there are a few dodges - and that's only what I've picked up with my limited knowledge of the language.
We could go down the path of asking Gatchamarie to translate the Italian version for us - but then you would have the problem of it being translated through yet another language - you lose the original meaning when that happens (trust me - I have subbed version of Gatchaman that's like reading Yoda from Star Wars because it was translated through a second language).
Then there's the timing - if you want to go with dubs. Some things are a lot quicker to say in Japanese than in English (hence the dodges) and vice versa. How do you cover those gaps?
So, as much as I applaud the idea as I would love to have Gatchaman II and Fighter, I can also see why it's not a project that's feasible unless you have access to the type of resources a large company has - not if you want a decent end result...

Wade, it's an awesome idea!
FWIW, there are fansubs of Gatchaman II (up to episode 24 - halfway through the series) in English. Also, Daniella has SOME Gatchaman II and F scripts in English on her site, but like Marie, she is translating through Italian.
Here are the issues I see with your idea. First, we'd need recording equipment, and some kind of studio/software to put the voices in. I have no idea how to do this, but I suspect it's a pile of work, unless someone really knows what they're doing. Then we'd need proper scripts and also this person who's capable of doing it.
Frankly, I think it would make more sense to do fansubs of the rest of the series. Althoguh then again, you need someone who can translate and the software to do it. But that seems like it's more doable.

Hey Wade, I love your idea. We could probably find someone to translate and write the script. Several BNF's here could do that. We just have one major stumbling block:
Copyright and licensing fees. Do you happen to know a lawyer who could write up the appropriate contract and someone to pay the fees?
This would be a fun thing to do, but it just seems to big to be done without doing it right.

It may be April and I may be a fool
After I wrote those first two posts, I was totally like, "What the heck did I just do?" So Thank You all for giving me the option to opt out here. That being said....
Copyright laws were the first thing I thought of too. I guess I do not understand how people are able to (legally) do those Gatchaman You Tube fan videos with no type of penalties. Would this not be along the same type of activity? It's not like I'm saying let's market this and make some coin. I'm saying since they don't want to do it themselves and take the money we are willing to throw at them... we got a board full of fans/artists that could do something.
Got to go. Be back.
Hold those thoughts.

Most of what is up on youtube contains copyright breach in some form or another. It is up to those who own the copyright to do something about it- and there have been a number of times when copyright owners have definitly taken action.
Wade, it would be a wonderful thing to do, however doing voice over dubs is a real art and even experienced voice-over actors can struggle.

Hi all!
There's one other aspect that no one has mentioned regarding the notion of doing fan-produced dubs. Even if someone had the equipment to do it, and even if someone had the scripts to do it, no one has the music & effects track required to do a proper dub. The M&E track is the audio track for the show containing just the sound effects and music, but none of the actor vocals. Without having that available, you'd either have to talk over the Japanese voice track or create an entirely new audio track. Either way, the end result would not be a true dub of Gatchaman II or Gatchaman Fighter, and would probably sound fairly awful.
James
Oh yeah, I agree it would be down right awful.
Originally my intent was simply that I've been reading the forums and the ComicCon sections. Wishing I could attend the dance some day. So I end up daydreaming what you all would be doing there. Probably drunk off your a$$es in your costumes and t-shirts. Well, than I thought there's got to be a little more than that. Maybe most are still all drunk but there's probably a section where they got episodes going on.... get some fans together, give them some lines as the show is going. BASICALLY like Gatchaman karaoke!!! I'm sure someone would have a video camera and post it up on YouTube.
Yup, just plain awful and yet maybe something to it???
Now it's all kind of blown up to this.
I'm thinking.

Wade, you weren't by chance at Lumos in Las Vegas a few years ago for one of the HP cons? You almost described me. Though I was the one drunk off my, and some of my companions were in costume.
Anyway, I do like your idea and wish it were practical.

Wade, don't feel bad. We're from all over the world, so the chances of us all gettng together in one place at one time is very rare.
Even for those of us in the US, not all go to Comiccon.
Our version of Gatchaman karaoke is our Interactive Fictions that we do - and these range from totally canon ones to completely un-canon.
Never fear to outline any scheme you think of here - we enjoy ourselves discussing the pros and cons!

Wade, FWIW, most of us aren't drunk, but some of us are in costume! The rest are in Gatchaman t-shirts. We tend to hang out and be very silly... at least, that's what I do! We enjoy the socializing, and for my part, being in costume, I enjoy reminding/educating other Congoers about the show.

Probably can't drink much anyway and still try and stand up in some of those costumes. Doesn't mean you can't have fun trying. I was only daydreaming. Thinking of a good time. Probably thinking of having a beer. Thinking of others having a drink and celebrating. I always end up offending someone and is never my intent and I will always be the first to apologize. Sorry for calling everyone a drunk. But in my defense I did say "Most all".
I'm interested in those 24 transaltions I think TJ mentioned. Maybe it's time to add one or two more translations to the collection.
I've been skipping ahead and watching Gatchaman II (up to episode 15) and Gatchaman Fighter (up to episode 4) on Veoh in the Japanese language. I am only up to Volume 9 in the original ADV series. I'm kind of mad at myself because I feel I should watch the show in order it's supposed to be watched. But that's not what seems to be happening. I'm watching basically whatever I can get my hands on at the moment.
Anyway I don't seem to have a problem watching the series in Japanese. I think with already reading a lot of the episode reviews I've found, that I beleive I have been able to follow the show at a decent understanding. But I am curious to see those 24 translations and then compare them to my own little thoughts.
Baby steps
Everybody tells me I need a hobby

Wade, if you'll be patient enough to wait for my being not tied up with RL and start translating some random Gatch F episodes from Italian to English, then you could compare some recaps with what you're watching in Japanese, having a better idea of what's going on! I can't do anything before the next few months, though ... sorry!
