Softball
My daughter's softball team is 3 - 0. She pitched today, her first full game of the season.
But, I ran into something I've never experienced before. A team that doesn't keep their own scorebook when visiting team. I caught a batter out of order; when they tried to argue, I showed them my book and said show me mistake. Because they didn't have a book, they said that it wasn't my call to make, a coach should. I said I am a coach. They argued that scorekeepers don't belong in the dugout. I shook my head, tactfully not pointing out that I'd been in the dugout for 21 years, but focused on the batter who was out of order. This team couldn't even produce a line-up card for us after the game started.

This is totally where I should have Flash come in and chat ... he is a slo-pitch geek... baseball, softball, you name it, he is a guru.
Batting out of order is a real peeve, and something the umps should get on right away. Most teams my DH plays on always have each others scorers pass along the batting line-ups so that each can keep an eye on things.
I think now that the focus is falling on illegal bats and people shaving them to make them "hot" ...
Obviously that won't be a concern with your daughter's league (and KUDOS for being 3-0!!)
You keep at them, girl... keep them playing fair!

This sort of addresses a problem in the larger world too.
Kids are so being discouraged to be competitive that the people running sports are forgetting to teach them to play to the rules and the spirit.
Many then give up that sport later because when they reach a stage where they have to play by the rules and be competitive, they can't understand it!
You really do have to laugh - complaining that kids and young adults have no sense of community and no disipline or are just hooligans and then you look at how they've been brought up with absolute no realisation of consequences.
At least when I grew up, if I broke the rules, I got the consequences (even if the consequence was a clip round the ear.)
No - I don't have kids, but I spent 10 years as a cub scout leader so have had a lot of influence over kids - and still do!! SOme of my cubs are grownup now and I'm so proud that they turned out well and that I had a part to play in that!
I believe in letting kids compete - you have to learn how to loose as well as win and you have to learn that there are some things that you're not good at and thats OK.
I also believe that you shoudl let them learn consequences - adn that means giving adults back the power to discipline.
There is absolutely NO excuse for abuse or beating of any human being, but most of us grew up gtting a smack when we needed it - and we all seem to be OK....
(this is, of course, a very broad view of OK where Gatchamania comes under "normal")
Sorry - this is a bugbear of mine. I've had to deal professionally with adults who were still children due to their upbringing...

My hubby trained me to scorekeep for him at a competitive youth baseball level. I don't make mistakes like that that can't be traced. I've never seen a team that doesn't keep a book for as visiting team.
But yeah, we eat, breathe, and sleep baseball in any form around my house.

Maddy, you are preaching to the choir. We are raising a generation of children who are not going to know how to deal with people who are not all two-faced, sun-shiny smiles. I live by this rule with my children: Don't leave bruises. Children currently have more power than adults, fortunately only a few realize how to abuse it.

It's a shame that, in a situation that is supposed to be about fairness and fun, it is obvious that someone (ie. their coach) is actually teaching underhanded tricks and dishonesty.
And, generally speaking, these people are the first to jump up and down yelling about rules when they notice the same thing being done to them...

I don't think they batted out of order intentionally, and it was some lady in the stands who came out on the field to complain about me, which should not have happened. If they could have produced a book to show that I was wrong, I would have listened, so would the other coaches. They just couldn't produce a book, or even their own line-up card.
Ironically, what they should have called us on was having too many people in the dugout, we should have only had three, but one of them can be a scorekeeper, and we had four.

If mine is on any forums other than cbs sportsline he is likely under bbcoach13. I think on sportsline he might be ricks7, but I could be wrong.

I havent been actively involed in the scouting movement for about 8 years now - and it's longer since I've been a leader there.
As for time to hang out - no family and the only one in my group of friends who's partner is not physically here, so I tend to spend a lot of time at home alone.
Hanging with you guys!! Trust me - my life is boring.

Oh, Maddy, I think our lives are running parallel. My daughter bridges to Cadets in a month and a half, while my son is First Class working towards Star. I've been drafted to do Tour Permits for his troop.

I have to say this is the one part I am not looking forward to again about being a mum. Raising my son they played all games by the rules growing up with the new culture of not teaching children rules for games I wonder how it will affect my little girl as she grows up.
Hopefully over the next few years after birth she can get daddy to teach her football. He is very into that (used to play) and is very much into playing by he rules of the game.

Amethyst, all of you have already said it all! I'm so sorry you had to undergo such a situation but you did good to make your point and stick with it! Sometimes there has to be someone that needs to do things right!
Unfortunately, that's today's world and it's a pity that in sports, which one day was so very useful to teach kids rules, responsibility and teamwork, this is not showing as it once did! My kids are too young to compete, being almost 6 and 4.5 respectively, but I'm taking them to football and gymnastics lessons. Until now I'm not disappointed with the coaches cause they're teaching them the good way and the most important things, and this has shown in the attitude of my children. I'm saying "until now" because I don't know how the trend will become once they grow up and head on in RL! As parents we're trying to do our best to teach them!

Ironically, the current economic situation has meant that parents are no longer able to bubble-wrap their children the way they used to. And that actions have consequences. Maybe that will help.
Yeah, in the US there seems to have been this movement to protect children from all sorts of stress and trauma. The result is that a generation will grow up unable to cope the moment something doesn't go their way. You think we currently have public hissy fits in this country? Wait a few years.

Not softball, but close. My son's baseball team had their second game tonight and are now 2 - 0!
Yes that's we're I've been today, running errands with hubby and watching baseball. It would have been nice if it weren't so cold and rainy here.
See ya'll in the morning. I'm heading to bed to warm up.
