Hello all, thank you for the warm welcome! I’ve been “lurking” around the past few days and enjoying everyone’s posts—some have me laughing to tears! Also have been enjoying the artwork, there is such a talented group here.

What brought me to Gatchamania is a long story—round of drinks for everyone, on me!

When I was a kid, I remember seeing a commercial for an upcoming new show called “Battle of the Planets, which included a Space Princess, a Boy-Scout-like Luke Skywalker named Mark, a rebel dude Hans-Solo type called Jason, and worst of all, 7-Zark-7! I was not interested in what was clearly a Star Wars rip-off and wanted to change the channel, but was outvoted by my three siblings, and there was only one TV in the house.

The show grew on me. Maybe it was Mark’s baby-blues and velvety yet edgy voice, Jason’s overall coolness, Tiny’s sense of humor, the fact that Princess could keep up with the best of them, or that Andersen looked exactly like my science teacher. The show had a great look and the mechas were awesome. Despite some laughable flaws and obvious plot omissions transparent even to us kids (“Those astronauts didn’t leave the base with Mark and Keyop—I bet they died but they don’t want to tell us that.”) there was some true character development going on here. We were hooked, and couldn’t wait for the next development.

We were all disappointed when the show was eventually cancelled, feeling as though we didn’t get the whole story. Whatever became of mark's father, Cronos? And which hunk did Princess like better? Being in her shoes, I didn’t know if I would ever be able to choose…

Recently I heard the rumor that a BotP live action movie was being filmed, and began surfing the net for more information. Here I encountered the original Gatchaman series, which filled in all of the plot holes we had been missing (Joe?! Say it ain’t so!) My 4-year-old is now a big BotP fan, but I won’t let him watch the Gatchaman series, saving this for myself when he’s asleep at night. I’m now a third of the way through the Gatchaman II series, having to guess what they’re actually talking about…

Which brings me here to this site at last. Nice to know there are so many others who love this show in all of its incarnations as much as I do, and keep it alive. Looking forward to many discussions with you all!

Swan Song, your story sounds very similar to lots of ours. In my case since I was the older sibling I made sure my vote counted so we got to watch BOTP. Like you when the show was cancelled I felt there was a lot left unsaid.

Swan Song, your story is so similar to many of ours! I too was enchanted with BOTP as a kid and learned about Gatchaman as an adult. And now my kids are into it. In fact, my son is play Condor Joe as I type right now... Wink

Yup - I think that pretty much applies for all of us. I remember falling in love with both Mark and Jason as a teenager. Nothing changed much really!!

And many of us have posted fanfics on fanfiction dot net and over at Gatchfanfic.

And then there's the awesome art by some of the gang as well.

It's nice to meet you, Swan Song! Wave2

I too discovered BOTP as a kid and was captivated by it, though my problem was that I could only watch it if my older brother and sister weren't around -otherwise they'd overrule me and change the channel.

I'm glad you joined us here!
