Imagi Layoffs
Hi all!
Felix Ip's blog broke some news that's hardly a surprise. On Friday, Imagi let go of 100+ members of their Hong Kong staff. He doesn't say too much beyond how disappointed he is, but you can read what he has to say at:

Oh no! This sure as hell doesn't sound like the action of a company that's about to make a Gatchaman movie.
Damn.
That's really bad news!

Hi all!
An article regarding the layoffs appeared in a the Chinese newspaper, "Oriental Daily News." Below is a rough translation (Thank you Google) of the article. I have not gone through it to correct the grammar, but it still reads clearly enough to know what it is saying. I did change references from "A boy" to "Astro Boy," and the reference to "were extraordinarily brave Eagle Xia" to "Gatchaman" for the sake of clarity.

Fake layoffs immediate concern of economic recovery
The occasion of New Year approaching, local companies laying off and then came the storm. Earlier investment of nearly 500 million Hong Kong dollars cooked Hong Kong-produced animated film "Astro Boy," listed animation company Imagi International Holdings Limited, yesterday, of human resources to adjust the grounds that the drastic reduction of 100 employees, representing about a quarter of the company as a whole a staff, the affected staff are required to leave immediately for compensation in accordance with labor laws. The labor sector believed that the local economy despite signs of recovery, but the unbalanced development sectors, individual businesses have been slow to develop or even recession, worries will be continued to lay off a crisis.
Imagi Animation production companies for local, one of three former employ as many as 400 employees. Imagi International corporate offices located at Siu Sai Wan, Chai Wan, an industrial building, the company began about noon yesterday, large envelopes distributed to employees, reporters visited the company yesterday afternoon, and out of the employees have refused to comment on matters of corporate downsizing, while the on-site findings The company occupies four floors of office guarded by security guards stationed on each floor.
Cut nearly a quarter of a severely affected animator.
The company spokesman confirmed yesterday this newspaper, in response to human resource adjustments made to the Hong Kong operations in order to effectively balance the studio needs and to meet the business development plan to develop the mainland, the company laid off 100 people yesterday, real-time, accounting for about a quarter of the total number of employees One of the majority of affected employees are animators, they will receive compensation according to labor laws, but the spokesman did not disclose the length and affected staff departments.
The spokesman acknowledged that this is the first time since the founding of the company's layoffs, the company currently is developing production processes and training in the Mainland by the layoffs affected employees can apply for the job, but I wonder if to absorb the redundant employees. The Labor Department inquiry, said the department had not received the affected employees yesterday for help.
Imagi International spokesman declined to comment on "Astro Boy" is a loss which led to cost savings to be laid off, stressing that "Astro Boy" in some areas still on the drawing, together with the film's peripheral products are still available for sale in yet be fully calculated the balance of payments, and the company is preparing for its second film "Gatchaman," and another five planned is entering various stages of production, the future will have different movie released.
Signs of a recession in many sectors.
General Confederation of Trade Unions Lee Cheuk-yan pointed out that the United States developed the creative industries in Hong Kong it difficult to compete, leading to wastage, at present, although the economy is gradually recovering, but the development is uneven in all walks of life, individual industries such as freight forwarding industry and so on, there will be slow to develop or signs of recession, the future there will be layoffs crisis.
Ming the labor sector in the Legislative Council members argued that although Hong Kong's economy has shown a stable, but the industry still are "warm still cold," there are still sporadic individual companies to lay off, he worried that Hong Kong's inflation, wage earners pay failed to keep up inflation will cause labor tensions.
It reads to me as though Imagi still plans to complete Gatchman.

That is what I understood as well Becky, or at least tried to see if I could interpret in another way.

It's sad news, but not really unexpected, given that Astroboy was hardly the financial success they thought. Interesting that kost of the layoffs are animators.
Thanks for passing on this news, James.

No big surprise, considering how many times they've changed the release date. Hope it doesn't end up on a shelf gathering dust for the next 20 years.
Even though I am feeling doubtful about the movie...I did see that IMDB added voice actors for Jinpei and Ryu on their site...maybe that was added before all of this layoff business...
