*THAT* slap - Jigokillers pt. 2

Standing before the Galactor captain, Ken stared him down.

“Preying on helpless women, you’re just a coward!” He spat before punching the bat like creature in the stomach. The villain collapsed slowly, the wind knocked clean out of him.

“Ken!” The voice he had been afraid of never hearing again.

He turned around. Jun was standing close, the three others behind her. Her eyes closed slightly in relief at her rescue just moments before the iron claw would have skewered her. Ken’s eyes widened in return.

SLAP

He back-handed her across the face. Hand still connecting despite the protection of her helmet.

“You acted on your own without receiving orders, Jun.” His voice cold.

Jun hid her eyes in shame; head turned away, arms crossed over her chest. Ken looked up, noticing the stunned expressions on the faces of his male team mates.

Faster than she should be able to move, Jun spun her yo-yo straight into his crotch. His hands moved too late to prevent the strike from colliding with his manhood. For a moment Ken remained standing, shock apparent on his features. They twisted as the pain ripped through him and the gasping air escaped his mouth. His body folded in half, his knees hit the floor, his head landed on the ground, the point of his visor dug into his chest.

Jun nudged his shoulder with her foot. Ken’s body slid to the side, his hands still wrapped around his wounded pride. Jun looked down at him intently, waiting until his pain-wracked eyes focused on hers.

“If you ever even think about bitch-slapping me again, not only will I use my yo-yo - I will initialise its electric current. Think about it, Mister Eagle, first name Hypocrite. That voltage through your testicles would result in no eaglets – ever! Am I making myself clear?”

Ken nodded, unable to vocalise. His eyes followed her as she turned towards the others.

“Comments?” Jun asked, an edge in her voice.

“Eight.” Jinpei replied promptly. “I would have liked to have seen some up close and personal action. You know, a knee, perhaps?”

“Nine. Liked the eaglet comment, but you shoulda bitch-slapped him right back, gave him some of his own medicine.” Ryu’s diagnosis.

“Six. You know how I feel about warnings. Should have just electrocuted the little swimmers,” Joe smirked. “That way there would never be any eaglets to grow into Eagles who think it’s still 1972.”

My deepest apologies to all Eagles. UnpublishedWriter reminded me of this episode, and more importantly, of the ending.

This little jewel (of the family kind) came to me while I should have been working. I am blaming a 6 am start on a saturday, an excessive amount of caffeine and my own perverse sense of humour that will rear it's ugly head at the worst times....

Again, to all Eagles - I'm truly sorry Angel4

OMG Winknudge
Good story! But can our Swan really be so cruel to her beloved Commander?

Ouch, Green! As an Eagle I'm still hurting! ... just kidding! What a good writeup! I think, in this case, Jun didn't electrocute him because she wished that, some day, those "little swimmers" made their way to her desired destination!

In fact, we've discussed this issue several times in past threads! No one (I think) agrees with how Ken welcomed his female Teammate after having painfully thought of her possible demise ... not even us Eagles! Jun's inactive response had several times been reprimanded ... she almost acted as if she enjoyed being slapped, for goodness sake! What a humiliation! She knew Ken's character and attitude, and she may have been attracted to him, but that just not justify her lack of confrontation.

On the other hand, there are those other issues that can, by some way or another, excuse Ken's behaviour even if it was totally unjustified and exagerated! For example ... his trying to cover up his true emotions and inner turmoil, his maintaining his position as a Commander and as an example for the others, his pulling himself up after being battered up by RI, his realization of how weak he had felt and been after thinking he had lost Jun and trying not to portray this aspect of his to his subordinates. In past discussions we've also mentioned that this did not seem such an insult to women during those days due to certain Japanese customs which still prevailed at that time. Yet, there's no excuse for what he did ... in my opinion, he could have dealt with the situation in another, more civilised way. Looking at the bright side, Jun did return this slap and another with a greater one in the Gatch F series! Way to go, at last!

Um, I think I can give two reasons why she might...

1. So that when he finally works out what's what, he will always treat her with the respect she deserves.... And, of course, that little bit of fear will mean he will ALWAYS be good to her Sneeky

2. He might just like it?

Just MY thoughts, of course.....devillook

UW made a good point about why he slapped her - in essense when your emotions are put through the wringer, you'll react in ways you wouldn't normally.

I've seen mothers smack their child after that child has just escaped being hit by a car - they are just so angry (read: afraid) with what could have happened when the kid ran out into the road. They respond with instinct (to teach the child quickly not to put themselves into such danger again), not with the relief that you would normally expect.

I guess I should point out that this came from the reactions of the other three members of the team's point of view, not from Ken hitting Jun. I put myself in their perspective as if it were today. If I saw a team mate reprimanded in such a way, I would be rooting for that person to stand up, not to accept such a humilating physical punishment, and if for some reason they couldn't, then I would have more than just a few words to say...

As for the scoring at the end, did I mention there were copious amounts of caffeine involved? A 6 am start? Work on a saturday? Spin1

And this happens a lot of time! I don't know how many times did I ask myself why I acted in a way instead of another ... or why did I say other words instead of those that I really meant! We can say that the more you love or care for someone, the more your reactions become awkward towards that someone in some dire cases!

HA HA! Loved it! What an awesome little snippet to run into while having my pre 6am coffee myself...

Both endings in BotP and Gatch were pretty insensitive toward the Swan:

Ken slaps Jun...

Mark let her captors go free, which I think is worse than a slap...

I do understand Ken's reaction, however... Green, you brought up the mum giving the kid a smack after he/she runs into traffic. Oh I have been there TWICE... and, yeah, call child services, Josh got a smack across the butt for it, followed by a weeping hug, of course... The last time he did it he freaked out an entire store of people as he dashed out of the door across a road and into the carpark. It was a definite "buy yourself a lotto ticket" moment as it is usually a busy road and there were thankfully no cars on the road at that time... I thank Buddha that Flash lived up to his monniker and flew off after him that time... (he was waiting in the car)... but I digress..

Of course the difference here is that my son is only four, whereas Jun is practically an adult. If he truly did it for the same reasons a panicked mother would do it, then he should have done as Jinpei suggested and finished it with a hug.

I love that you gave Jun the chance to answer to the slap here ... well done... The hynpocritic bastard runs off all the time, her response is perfect.

Thank you for this.... I totall enjoyed it!!

Too funny, Green! I do think Jun should have responded, but then, she was probably too shocked to do anything. What gets me even more than the slap in this episode is the expression of gooey-eyed devotion she gives Ken right afterward.

I came up with another explanation for the slap in one of my fics.

“Preying on helpless women!” Gatchaman growled. “You’re just a coward!”

“What? No!” the Captain protested, even as the Eagle’s hand sank into his gut. The Galactor sank to the ground, falling into unconsciousness, before Gatchaman slit his throat with his boomerang.

Joe forced himself to stand back, leaning against the wall. Jun only had eyes for Ken, and he was damn well going to give her a chance to speak to him. And now that the Eagle had actually acknowledged what he felt for the Swan, Jun would finally find the happiness she deserved.

The Condor felt a surge of emotion as the Swan approached the Eagle.

“Ken!”

Jun’s voice was soft and warm, the intensity of her feelings brimming behind the single word she had uttered.

Ken’s eyes opened wide, and his features relaxed from the tension that had all but taken them over for the past forty-eight hours. He reached out toward Jun…

Suddenly, his hand stiffened, and the Eagle landed a slap across the Swan’s cheek. Jinpei gasped, and Joe’s fingers clenched into fists. What the hell was wrong with Ken? They had thought that Jun was dead, and she had been a Galactor captive for two days, and this was the way he welcomed her back to the Team?

“You acted on your own, without receiving orders, Jun.” Ken stated coldly. Joe could hardly believe his ears. Dr. Nambu had practically invited Jun to wear the suit and try it out! ‘Without receiving orders’ wasn’t exactly the truth. And even if it had been, there were more important issues to deal with, for the moment.

And then, with sudden insight, Joe realized that for Ken,
this was the most important issue. Duty was paramount to the Eagle, and he was enforcing that priority here and now. The rebuff he had just given to the Swan was far more devastating… far more final… than any refusal he had ever sent her way during those nights at the Snack J.

“Aniki knows he’s happy.” Jinpei insisted to Ryu. “He should be hugging her!”

If only it were that simple.

And FWIW, in my BOTP version of this scene...

The other Spectrans all appeared to be too busy to notice the disappearance of their ‘captive’. They simply saw the approaching wave of attacking wings and fled. Within a few moments, there were only a few green-uniformed soldiers remaining, as well as a distraught Captain Morloc.

The Eagle approached the bat-winged man, a cold fury in his eyes, the like of which Princess had never seen before. He grabbed Morloc by the throat, an accusatory glare slashing through the Spectran Captain’s face.

“Spare me, Commander!” Morloc begged, staining his pants in fear. A puddle began to grow at his feet.

“I shouldn’t.” Mark spat through gritted teeth. “But go ahead, get your men out of here.”

The Swan had never seen this expression on her Commander’s face before. Usually, Mark felt sorry for the soldiers they fought, and generally wanted to give them a chance to escape.

But not on this particular occasion. This time, the Swan could tell by the Eagle’s menacing countenance that he would love nothing more than to tear the Spectran Captain limb from limb. It was only the most tenuous of holds on his sense of honor that kept him from doing so.

“Thank you, Commander!” Morloc gasped gratefully, ignoring his men as he ran off. But instead of fleeing the base, he merely ran around the corner, initiating a transmission on his portable communications device. The Eagle’s enhanced hearing allowed him to listen in on a report that the Spectran Captain had probably not intended for the G-Force Commander to hear.

“Lord Zoltar,” his voice whispered furiously, “the Rigan informant was wrong! It was not the one known as Princess! The Swan has arrived with the rest of the G-Force Team! No wonder the torture revealed nothing…”

Morloc’s speech was cut off by the sharp sound of a Sonic Boomerang slicing through his neck. The Commander had moved around the corner, and Mark now stood trembling with anger as he caught the bloody weapon on its return to his hand.

“Torture…?” he whispered.

The others were joyously greeting Princess, ecstatic to have her amongst them once again. The Commander turned to face the happy reunion, still grappling with what he had just heard.

Princess saw him, stepping forward, a smile of intense relief and happiness on her face.

“Hi, Mark…” she whispered, a myriad of emotions revealed in those two innocuous words. But her expression turned to one of concern as she saw the anger that still boiled within the Eagle.

“Good to have you back, Princess.” he replied automatically, his brain still attempting to process what he had heard from the Spectran Captain and correlate it with the image of his Swan standing before him.

She reached out, tentatively, concern written across her face.

“Mark…?”

It was like a cold slap in the face. She was back, she was safe, and despite her ordeal, she was only concerned about him. Choking off a sob, Mark roughly pulled Princess into his embrace.

“I’m fine, Princess.” he reassured her. “Now that you’re back where you belong.”

Hmmm.... I made no mention of Eaglets in either one. Score one for Green! thumbsup2

That slap -in fact, that whole scene- is definitely one that can benefit from some elaboration and reinterpretation, as Green and TJ demonstrate well!

I love these snippets into the slap and the BotP version. You guys are very talented... love it!

I've never gone into that scene itself in my own work, but usually focus on the aftermath. I don't write Gatch at all (although I have ventured there on one or two occasions rather poorly), but I tend to write the off-scene things.

In Dear Diary I focused on Mark's reaction to the scene at hand... but that's about as close as I've ever dared venture to it..

In Revenge it was more Princess' disgust at Mark letting the guy go free... Although I kindly gave Mark a viable "out" in that one ... just because I honestly cannot believe that after all he suffered and all Princess suffered, that he'd simply let the dude go. That always pissed me off when I watched it as a kid.

But kudos to you Green and to you TJ for sharing your work and your visions on this scene... awesome..

Yeah, there was no explaining that look... unless the Swan liked it.... OUCH. Apologies for that thought..

Obviously, I couldn't come up with a reason that made sense to me except the one that precedes this sentence, and I was NOT going to go there! Okies, I did, but only until the second cup of coffee hit me. Erm1 By the third I was down right disgusted with that look and had to change things to suit myself.

I would like to blame, um, THANK UnpublishedWriter for the episode reminder, and the whole egret/eaglet thing - apparently, according to my brain, Ken would one day father herons.... Don't try to make sense out of that, I certainly can't!

"Kenichi, how many times have I told you NOT to throw your boomerang in the house?"

"Uh, hello, Officer Smith. Suki in the playground with her yo-yo, again?"

"Mrs. Johnson, I check Kenichi's backpack every day. I have no idea where he keeps his boomerang."
