Secondhand Lions

Michael Caine. Robert Duvall,
and Berke Breathed for the ending credits

Need I say more?

It's labeled as PG, because there isn't anything that they kids shouldn't see, but there's not much in it to interest a kid.

Yeah, it stretches our disbelief in many ways, but that's part of the magic of it. Just sit back and let it entertain you.

It starts out with a kid being dropped off with two looney uncles whom he's never met, by a mother with questionable skills and goals. As is traditional, he and they end up getting along just fine.

Yes, we learn how the uncles made their big stash of money, and why they're excentric. And, yes, there is a satisfying ending.

A very nicely put-together movie -- just the right amount of humour around a powerful, and subtley led up to, main message, which is summarized by Duval's character and is now in my "favourite quotes" book:

"If you want to believe in something, then believe in it! Just because something isn't true, that's no reason you can't believe in it! ... Sometimes the things that may or may not be true are the things that a man needs to believe in the most. That people are basically good; that honor, courage and virtue mean everything; that power and money, money and power mean nothing; that good always triumphs over evil. And I want you to remember this, that love, true love never dies. Remember that.”

Definitely a good one go get when you need a quiet lift.

This is definitely one of my favorites. The ending is...fitting and, in my opinion, very believable. I really recommend this one.
