total newbie seeks advice

Hi everybody
I'm a total newbie and I need some advice. I've been recently searching for all things Gatcha and came upon this site. I grew up in ireland watching BOTP as a kid and now want to get hold of the real show behind that. I've trawelled through loads of dvd sites but I need somebody in the know to explain exactly what is out there. I want to get hold of the original gatchaman but i'm not sure which is which. There is the 105episodes newly released in 2005 (i think) on 3no. box sets, I think this was all remake in the 90's (which would be pretty cool I guess)?? There are also box sets that go up to volumn 20ish, are these the originals re-issued? Also I presume they are all in the japanese language with english subtitles but are there dubbed versions out there, as i'd like my son to check them out too? So thats kinda it......take pity on a poor ignoramous who has thought about his childhood cartoons for many years and please educate me in all things gatcha.
Kind Regards
PaulDianno

Welcome Paul D. Nice to have you drop in. Please feel free to stick around we are a very friendly bunch.

As for answering your question(s) I will leave that for better experts than me. I do know I have the 2004-5 ADV release of the 105 eps. You can watch it either in Japanese with English subtitles but also use the dubbed version as well (this is how I first watched it.)

I hope you find what you are looking for.

Hi Paul, and welcome! welcome

Yes, if you want the 'original' show, meaning Gatchaman, you need to get the ADV release, which is an English dub. As a bonus, all episodes are also offered in the original Japanese, with English subtitles, so you can watch whichever way you (or your son) would prefer.

I think rightstuf still has the ADV sets on sale, and they ship overseas...

http://www.rightstuf.com/cgi-bin/catalogmgr/TMeHyXBdWymp3K8mGa/browse/search/5/4/0/0/results/desc/asc/50/1

Hmmm.... it looks like they only have the individual discs until 12 (there are 18 ) but all 9 box sets (each box set contains 2 episode discs plus a 'bonus features' disc).

Keep in mind these would be Region 1 though. In case you're confused, THESE are the ADV sets:

Welcome PaulDianno! I agree that the ADV Gatchman releases are the best way to see Gatchaman (in English), and are worth every penny. I hope you get the chance to enjoy them!

Hi all!

These box sets are the original 1972~74 Gatchaman TV series, which ran for 105 episodes. The 1990s remake was a 3-volume made for video series, and was short enough that it was released on a single DVD.

There are also box sets that go up to volumn 20ish, are these the originals re-issued?

What I believe you're seeing here are the individual volumes from the box sets. The DVDs were released as both box sets (With 3 DVDs per set; two DVDs with episodes from the series and a disc of bonus material) and as individual volumes (The same two episode discs from the box sets release separately. The bonus discs were only available in the box sets). There were a total of 9 box sets and 18 individual discs. The box sets and the individual discs were released at the same time.

Also I presume they are all in the japanese language with english subtitles but are there dubbed versions out there, as i'd like my son to check them out too?

These volumes, produced by ADV Films, come with both the original Japanese language version (With optional English subtitles) and a new English language dub.

The ADV Films Gatchaman release is now out of print, so to get them you'll either have to buy them used or from someone who happenes to still have the discs in stock, like those in the Right Stuf link that Helen provided.

I hope this helps!

James

Hi PaulD

Like you I had never seen the original gatchaman and I intended to buy the ADV box sets over a period of time, then they stopped producing them. So in December I treated my self and got the entire set , new, from a US seller on Ebay. Cost me £180 all in , including shipping. They are still on there.

Hi Paul D and welcome.

Like you, I watched BOTP as a kid and found out about the original show from the 'net.

Like everybody here, I bought the ADV DVDs of the original show on Amazon.co.uk.

It's better to watch it in Japanese and read the subtitles instead of watching it in the English translation as the voices are pretty awful.

Welcome Paul to the site.. Hope you get a chance to enjoy the entire Gatch series on DVD.

There also are whole sets of the BOTP series out there. Most I think are in a different region then 1, so you will want to watch what you purchase.

You may notice that some of the wonderful gang on here, are reviewing 2 episodes a week. There also are other sites that can tell you a lot too.

If you have any comments/questions, I'm sure someone on here can help, even if it's pointing you in the right direction.

I have the Region 2 Box set of BOTP as well as Region 1 18 DVDs of Gatchaman, which I have watched on my PC.

It might take a you long time to watch both series, as it took me nearly a week with BOTP.

How can that be a bad thing......oh wait, watching Zark having phone sex with Susan in his 10 second oil brreaks.

I think I had more control as I had to go to work. I did calculate that you had to watch about 36 hours of BOTP in one go. How long did it take you and how did you manage it without any food, sleep, toilet breaks?

I know how you feel. Everytime Zark came on or when they were in the rest room, where Mark and Jason were playing the same table tennis game, Tiny was stuffing his face with an unlimited supply of Spaceburgers andd Princess and Keyop were playing the same tune, I just went "Oh go away, I don't want to watch this shit."

Pity BOTP can't be remade without Zark.

With Zark etc... that's when the toilet breaks came into play.... plus it was about a weekend, since I got the dvds in the mail on a Thursday... Only Friday was a "bad" day from work...

I must admit, I did fast forward over a few Zark scenes... thank god for fast forward (while still viewing) would hate to miss any of the team.

I have to agree here BOTP would be excellent without Zark, though woud we have appreciated saturns comic as much if it was?
