Nadescio -- Gatchaman?

Hey...

So I went on a hunt for some Astroboy things for Joshie (he is addicted to Astroboy and Gatchaman!!) and this let me toward a comic-book store...

For the first time in FOREVER I found a store where the people working there actually know something about what the sell.

I got into an AWESOME conversation with one of the guys who actually high-fived me when I said Josh loved Astroboy and Battle of the Planets.

**The high-five was so damn typical of a comicbook guy that I had to laugh. he half missed my hand***

Anyhoo. We got to talking about Gatchaman and BotP and birdies.

He suggested that I try to get in to a series called "Nadesico". Apparently focusses on a society he claimed based their existence on Gatchaman. He says that the whole animation changes whenever the Gatchaman references come in to play and is an absolute hoot.

So okay ... I browsed You Tube and found nothing remotely close except for, perhaps, a mild flashback to Voltron (if only for the giant robot) ...

So, my Gatchamania denizens, have any of you heard of this show/comic and it's "homage" to our birdies?

I'm really curious, but have no patience for watching through a bunch of big-titted Anime girls in search for the prize...

Gee, though, it was good having a face to face chat with a birdie fan! Obviously Flash got bored rather quickly so I was forced to abandon my new comic-book guy before I could get all of the gossip. (he was actually pretty adorable too)...

I ended up walking out with only an Astro Comic for Joshie .... It was the cheapest trip I have ever made to one of those stores, actually ... GASP

Hi all!

I watched the first 10 or so episodes of Nadesico when the series was first broadcast, and I suspect that the comic store fellow was a bit confused. Yes, the series does have a tribute to old-style anime series, but it's old-style giant robot series, not Gatchaman.

In Nadesico, there is a fictional old giant robot cartoon called "Gekiganga 3" that is popular among the crew, and they show bits and pieces of this show as the characters are watching it. From what we see of Gekiganga 3, it is very similar in style to Getter Robo. When they show segments from the series, they are done in a retro style that looks similar to the classic Toei giant robot shows. But no, it's not a Gatchaman tribute, though the Gekiganga 3 "theme song" was sung by Isao Sasaki, the man who provided the voice of Joe.

So, unless someone else who watched more of the show than I did tells us otherwise, I wouldn't watch Nadesico in hopes of finding a Gatchaman tribute, since it certainly wasn't there at the beginning of the series!

I hope this helps!

James

Oh James. I was so hoping you'd jump in and help me out here.

I did get confused when he commented about giant robots but never double-checked that it was, indeed, Gatch ... I was just too thrilled that there may have been something out there I have yet to see.

Thanks muchly for clearing that up for me ... You have saved me many disappointing download hours...

You are my hero, darlin!!

I love Nadesico. I have it the DVD set. Definitely one of my favorite mecha series (and I'm not much of a Mecha Fan). It also happens to be dubbed by ADV who also do the Gatch dub. A lot of Anime fans hate the dub, and it does indeed have it's quirky moments, but I LIKE it personally, I suppose in the same way people still like the BotP voices. It's a lot of fun either way.

Funny thing, coincidentally, I was watching some of my Gatch DVDs the other day and the whole Gekigangar parody came to my mind, and I recalled that two of the hero characters were named Ken and Joe, and they introduce a new hero named Ryuuzaki. So naturally I was shocked (going AHHHH I never would've noticed that before!)

If you're into quirky Anime comedies, give it a watch if you can.
