Hindu mythology, I take it? I haven't heard of this author, but it does sound interesting. Roger Zelazny sort of retold the Siddartha story in "Lords of Light" (except with a sci-fi premise) and I enjoyed it a lot.
`Lord of Light` yes, it won a Hugo.
