It was -11 F (-23 C) in Indianapolis yesterday morning -definitely nippy! My undergrad days in Montreal, these sorts of temperatures weren't unusual, but I haven't felt air that cold here before!

Yes, but you grew up in Canada, so you've already paid your dues.

I paid my dues, moved out to California, and my blood promptly thinned. I now feel cold if it gets below about 65F. Wink

Yeah I'm in Northern VA about 40 miles from D.C. I'm used to it getting into the low 20's, but not single digits! Laugh1 I'm spoiled from always living in the south... I wouldn't mind so much if we actually got snow, always freezing rain... I want spring so bad Flower

Yesterday was the first day above 0 in three days here (Illinois). It was 12 F and it almost felt balmy after the miserable -12 F days we had been having. School was canceled for the local kids, but the college remained open (class is not in session yet) so we all had to shovel snow in frigid temperatures and drag ourselves in to work. Half the staff still couldn't get in because their cars wouldn't start. I was raised on the East Coast and never experienced temperatures this low that I can remember. At least I chose this winter to learn how to knit socks, so my feet have stayed warm!

Biglaugh3 Cloud continues to sit back and laugh at all these comments from her American friends. *You really don't know what winter is like until you have lived through a Canadian one (or more)*

When should I send the Phoenix down to pick you all up to see some real snow and feel the real cold?

Sorry LB and TJ I know you have experienced Canadian winters so you are welcome to stay home if you want.

Cloud then runs out of the thread before people start throwing the Tomato

CD, at least I know that your not just laughing at me when I hear your evil laugh. Makes me feel a little better. Leapfrog

I must agree, I'm not used to these negative temps (and then add on wind chill) it makes me never want to go outside.

Heh, in a bizarre way, I enjoyed all those -20 C days in Montreal. When I started grad school in Ohio, the winters were all grey, slushy and dreary, but in Montreal on those cold, cold days, the air was dry instead of damp, there would be a cloudless blue sky and bright sun shining off the glittery snow that squeaked when you walked on it, and the cold air seemed like a zap of electricity that made me feel awake and alive. In Cleveland, Ohio, I couldn't understand why everyone wasn't trying to slit their wrists by February, the winters were so depressing.

Granted, in Montreal I was wearing a heavy wool coat, hat, scarf, gloves (sometimes gloves inside mittens), turtleneck, sweater, heavy pants, long underwear and sometimes two pairs of socks to walk from my apartment to campus...

That is exactly what I love about winter. The clear blue skies, the sun so bright it makes your eyes tear. the cold fresh air invigorating you, running and jumping in the snow and being able to brush it off without getting wet.

And then coming inside with rosy red checks and being able to snuggle up in front of a popping fire with an Eagle to wrap his arms around you while the Condor makes a nice cup of hot chocolate with real whipped cream and marshmallows ... oooops, sorry I guess I got to far into that day dream. highfive

Sorry, as someone who is (still) Canadian, I have to say that you guys are insane! Give me warm, dry heat any day. Big Grin

I'll take the Eagle and the Condor with me, but they'll get to wear bathing suits. Luvu2

Well, my sister, another Canadian in exile, would definitely agree with you. I do like the idea of the Condor and Eagle in bathing suits though!

You know my friend at work who brings in all the shopping carts (in a t-shirt too!) for me is always laughing at me cause I'm always freezing. He's half Canadian and lived in Toronto and Boston before, but when it was 0 out he said something he's never said before: "It's cold outside." Smile

Ahhh... most of the days it's dreary and miserable outside, the sky's all cloudy and dark... however, I do like the night sky better in winter because it's so clear and you can actually see stars for a change...
