Presents

Ok, I've just seen my first Holiday commercial, and it got me thinking...
Why is it that whenever one of the team members mentions a present, it's usually a weapon of some sort?

For example (not so much a weapon, but still tied to his occupation)- Ken offers "the fuel from his beloved plane" as a parting gift to Jun when she is stuck inside one of the jigokillers...

Jun offers a bomb to Ken during the Peacock episode once he tells the team he is alive and needs to escape from the Peacock mecha ("Ken, you're alive...a present from me..." she says)

And when Joe is about to die, Ken gives him his boomerang signifying his "heart", once he decides to leave Joe alone...

Of course, there was that smushed gift Ryu wanted to give to Jinpei during the Jupiter ninja episode...I'm wondering now if there was another weapon inside it...LOL

I'm wondering...was there any other time that they gave each other gifts? And if so, was it a weapon?
Gift

Hi all!

Well, one that immediately leaps to mind is in Gatchaman Fighter #10, when Dr. Nambu gives Jinpei a pair of boxing gloves as a birthday present

Despite what you might think from his expression, Jinpei thought they were "cool."

I don't recall any, but I am a BotP girl, so ... yeah ... don't believe there were mentions of gifts...

I'll suggest another toon ... In Speed Racer, when Trixie was hinting for Speed to let her know he was still interested in her, his first offer was a new igniter for her helicopter ...

Tonight on Family Guy, Brian commented that he left a dead bird as a gift for the family ...

Can't think of weaponry though ...

Hmm, you've raised an interesting point. I can't think of anything else except the time in ep. 94 when Ken (rather surprisingly!) offers to buy dinner for Jun and Jinpei, but that's not really a gift, or when Joe brought flowers to the woman he hit with his car in ep. 98, but she wasn't a member of the team.

I'll keep thinking, but it does seem that weapons hold a special significance for the team. As they are often in danger, and they use their weapons to defend themselves and each other, I could see why a weapon would be a very symbolic gift for them.

In Gatchaman F, when Dr. Nambu is under siege at a research hospital, Jun gives him a 'gift' of a grenade to help him make it through while she takes the research scientist who can cure Ken of the Hypershoot illness back to the ISO.

And who can forget the wonderful Gatch I episode about the Deadly Christmas presents? Even though it wasn't Christmas...

Oh, you guys make some good points! And James, boxing gloves? You mean someone actually gave a normal present? And for Jinpei's birthday, no less? Will wonders ever cease?
Very cool info! I'm glad to hear it wasn't another weapon! MG40
