I was waiting for Amy to answer this, but since she's not around....
Ego was born with the name of Erun. His father was the old Count Egobossler, and his mother was a castle maid. He was illegitimate. His father had a legitimate son named Kaseru, who was next in line to be the Count.
One night, Ego's father (who was given to fits of violence) killed the maid (Ego's mother). As she died, she revealed to Ego the truth of his parentage. Ego ran away. When he returned, he had had surgery to change his appearance to look exactly like that of his legitimate half-brother Kaseru. The process had somehow made his skin blue and his hair white. He challenged his father, and Kaseru took out his sword, slicing the bandages off of Ego's face (which is how he got his cheek scar). Ego kileld his father and imprisoned his brother, usurping his place and telling everyone that HE was Kaseru.
I'm a little fuzzier on the next bit, but later on in the series, the real Kaseru is released and he stages a rebellion to take back the title from Erun/Ego. One of Ego's generals (name escapes me at the moment,but the one with the headphones) deserts him, calling him a traitor, but Mekandor remains at his side (the one who looks like Gimli). Eventually Erun kills his brother and quashes the rebellion, solidifying his hold on the title of Count Egobosler.

Why is Egobossler blue? There are so many possibilities:
1. Because he's a Smurf.
2. Because he's depressed.
3. Because he's an Andorian
4. Because he's cold.
5. Because he's a Gamilon.
6. Because he needs air.
7. Because he's really Mr. Freeze
8. Because of a frat prank gone wrong.
9. Because he's a member of the Blue Man Group.
10. Because he eats too many blueberries.
Oh. You want a reason as explained in the series itself. Sorry, they don't give us one. He had a normal flesh color until he went away to get his plastic surgery. When he came back, he was blue. That's just the way it was, and we weren't told exactly why he went for the full-body dye job.
Sorry this doesn't really help!

I see that the creators didn't throw away the idea of a long lost brother. At one time, they were going to use a long lost brother of Joe's to come back to the team instead of Joe returning himself. Is that right, James?

to you!I knew that the original concept was to have Joe's brother join the team, but I never knew any of the details (ie: his name or that Joe was supposed to lose his memory). Since these ideas never came off the ground, the canon set-up could lead to some interesting fics! I only wish I had the time (and effort) to put into something like this! I think it would be an interesting topic to explore.
