The Deed of Paksenarrion

The Deed of Paksenarrion
Elizabeth Moon

This is actually a trilogy. The Sheepfarmer's Daughter, Divided Alliance, and Oath of Gold.

It tells the tale of a young woman, Paksenarrion, Paks for short, who runs away to join the mercinaries so she doesn't have to marry the pigfarmer down the road. What follows is an epic story, as she lived it, of growth and adventure for Paks which takes her from becoming a simple sheepfarmer's daughter, to a hero sang about in legend.

People who like high fantasy and have a general affection for Lord of the Rings will like this series. People who like historical military books will enjoy this one. People who like determined characters with an epic, yet believable, warts and all, plot, combined with an easy to read aloud style of writing will like this series. It gets it's roots from TSR style role playing, but sets itself well and above any of the same old repetative junk writing that passes for high fantasy coming from TSR in the last 15 years. Purer in form and more noble than any of the Dragonlance books, of which I have been a fan before, to be sure. A mature person's fantasy that avoids being dry and plodding.

This is simply one of the best, most 'realistic' <if you can call it that> fantasy books I have ever had the pleasure to read.

Haven't read that series, but I love Moon's other one, with Herris Serrano and all the rest. So many characters, changing as they learn, so incredibly smoothly introduced and melded into so many views of one system.

I'm pretty sure Moon used to be in the military herself, active. And she used to be a paramedic. It definitely shows in her work.

Pardon while I work through the latest load from the library so I can go get this series.
