IMAGI announces Astro Boy voice cast

I was reading on ToonZone.net that IMAGI has announced the voice cast for Astro Boy. They include Nicholas Cage, Donald Sutherland, Nathan Lane, Bill Nighy and Eugene Levy. Freddie Highmore will be voicing Astro Boy.

If IMAGI already has a signed a voice cast for Astro Boy, this sounds like the Gatchaman movie has been put on the back burner.

Hmm, two Canadians, two Americans and two Brits.

Clearly, Astroboy is much further ahead of Gatchaman now, as Imagi hasn't even announced the new director for Gatchaman yet, much less the voice cast!

It could be a coincidence, but Jun Falkenstein updated her blog today at

"Keepin' it brief...story still proceeds ahead; we have had a minor screening of Act 1 and part of Act 2 recently; just threw it up there really quickly to see what we got. There were a lot of notes (including a lot from me), but overall they were helpful - we have learned a lot about what kind of film it ultimately needs to become. On to the next phase! Also, my studio - might as well say it, it's Imagi Studios - will have a big booth at the Anime Expo in Los Angeles in a couple of weeks. I've never been to this one; even though they are featuring our OTHER movie at the moment I still will probably wander by to check it out. Besides, Cosplayers are insanely fun to gawk at."

Ummm, does she mean the Comicon in San Diego or is there an Anime Expo in Los Angeles as well?

Maybe if enough questions are asked at the Con we could get confirmation of what is happening.

Anime Expo is a separate convention held in Los Angeles over the July 4th weekend, focusing strictly on anime. The San Diego Comic Con is held a couple of weeks later, and is more of a general comics, science fiction and fantasy interest convention.

While Jun didn't mention it in her post, I have noticed that Imagi Studios now has a booth at the Comic Con, so they will be there as well.

Thank you James for the clarification.

My guess is that Astro Boy is farther ahead in the production schedule than Gatch is just due to the fact there was a director/partial creative team change. Gatch pretty much went back to the drawing board (literally), which was echoed in Jun's post.

As for the voices... Nathan Lane?? I love Nathan Lane as an actor and voice talent, but I'm trying to think of what character he would voice in Astro Boy. I never really thought of him as a sci-fi/anime type of voice.

Hmmm, then again, if anyone had told me that Casey Kasem would be cast as voice talent in an Americanized anime series about 5 implanted teens who dress in bird outfits and save the universe from a maniacal terrorist organization who never killed anyone, I would probably think that wasn't an accurate casting job either! He could probably do a good Higeoyaji/Mr. Pompus. They could try to use him as Dr. Ochanomizu/Dr. Elefun, but I don't think he'd do as well in that role.

Tengu. Have some Faith! A change in director isn't always bad. For all we know she could be the one that makes it come out like it should.

As for voice actors... I don't really know many to honest.
