I never really watched Speed Racer as a kid (I had heard of it though) and I'm one of the few people who didn't think the Matrix was all that it was cracked up to be... BUT, the trailor looks pretty cool! Nice fine.

Ohh, this is going to be very good!
The Speed Racer reminds me of Superman. Maybe's just because the haircut!

WOW... with Speed Racer coming out soon, Imagi better get the Gatchaman trailer up and running...this movie would be the perfect movie to play the trailer at...so many Speed Racer fans watched BOTP as kids, too!

Cool!! I didn't realize that it partially live action though (I thought it was totally CGI, like Gatch) or that John Goodman was in it. Can't wait to see it!

Hi all!
Yes, you remembered correctly, Warner Bros. and Imagi did sign a deal to have Warners distribute the Gatchaman and AstroBoy films.
It would seem a natural to promote Gatchaman to the Speed Racer audience, but Imagi doesn't have to rush too much to get their Gatchaman trailer ready, since Speed Racer won't hit Theaters until May 9, 2008.
James
I was really looking forward to the Speed Racer movie based on the cast and car choice, but the trailer really killed the deal for me. I don't care for the bright and futuristic film style, and REALLY don't care for the "video-game" look of the racing scenes. I'll most likely still go see the movie out of my respect for the original show, but I'm thinking this is somewhat of a missed opportunity.

Hi all!
If you'll excuse a bit of a shameless plug, I figure that it might not hurt to mention that a series of articles on the history of Speed Racer, written by yours truly, have just started running on the SciFi Japan website, which can be found at:
http://www.scifijapan.com/articles/
The first part is more or less an overview of the basic premise of the series, just as kind of a warm-up. The real meat-and-potatoes portion starts with the second part.
Okay, enough of my self-serving advertising.
James
Very cool, James! I can't wait to read the next part!
Hmmm, I'm wondering if I should rent the Speed Racer series?? I was never a huge fan, but I'm wondering if most of the story was lost on me since I was so young. Does anyone know if Mach Go Go Go went through the same editing as Gatch and basically became a sterilized version of itself? Or was most of the storyline left intact when translated to English?

Speed Racer was left pretty much intact from what was in the Japanese storylines. The kids TV watchdog groups didn't get started in on complaining about cartoons being a bad influence on kids until after Speed Racer was released, so what editing it had was minor.
Should you rent it? Well, I'd say yes, rent a disc of episodes and take a look at it. The animation is not as nice as what we're used to seeing in later Gatchaman episodes, but it was a step above most of what was being done in Japan at the time, and is fairly impressive when you consider that it was only the second TV series produced by Tatsunoko.
One thing that might have you cringing are the names of the characters. In the 1960s, it was very common for characters in dubs of Japanese shows to be given "descriptive" names. You'll run across people like Ali Ben Schemer, Snake Oiler, or Lightfingers Klepto. It was this same kind of thinking that gave us names like Ace Goodheart and Dr. Brighthead in "G-Force." These kind of names are cute and all, but when looked at with an adult sensibility, it does make it hard to take these people seriously. Just figured i should warn you!
James
Hi all!
Just a quick mention that the second part of the articles on Speed Racer is now up on SciFi Japan. It can be found at:
http://www.scifijapan.com/articles/
This one covers some background on Tatsunoko and the people who made the series, as well as the production of the show itself.
James
Me and my girl friend are going to go watch this as soon as we can lol.
