Talisman is back!

For anyone into board games or roleplaying games, you've probably heard of Talisman by Games Workshop. It's an awesome board game that has had a huge cult following for decades.

Well, Games Workshop has finally released the fourth edition, which basically is an updating of the most popular second edition of the game. I just picked up one for my DH's birthday!

This game has special meaning for us, because my DH proposed to me using this game... Big Grin Luvu1

We played it over the weekend. It's pretty true to version 2, with some minor modifications for better playability. For example, if you kill strength monsters, you can save up for strength, but NOW if you kill craft monsters you can save up for craft, They also give some good suggestions (easy to implement) if you want to run a shorter game.

The extras are also of nicer quality, but then, you pay for that with the game.

I haven't played Talisman since the early 90s )we used to use the Dungeon and Timescape expansion sets as well). I had forgotten most of the actual rules so I didn't realize there were any minor changes. Wink The game looks really nice.

Now I'm reading the errata on the Black Industries website. *grin*

Dungeon and Timescape are cool. Timescape adds that fun sci-fi element. We used to play with the City and 'Expansion' expansions too. My favourite was when I played the Orc, and he became a cyborg, had a symbiant as a follower, and then became the Sheriff of the City (even though it was illegal just to be an Orc). Wink

The only expansion we never got (and this one was hideouly expensive because it was the last one and they made so few of them) was the Dragon Expansion.

Apparently they have designed this version of Talisman in such a way that they are going to bring out the expansions for it. Yay! Big Grin

I hear you on that, FB...I love RPGs, but I haven't played any board games...just video games like Final Fantasy (love it!)

But I'd like to learn how to play some of those games...they sound like fun!

Okay, we played our first full game tonight. My wife ended up winning (she was a Wizard). Her grandson's character (the Dwarf) died at one point and he started again with the Prophetess character (a very cool character). The luck wasn't with him though because he got turned into a toad 4 times (3x as a Dwarf and once as the Prophetess)! I was the Warrior with kick-ass Strength by the end of the game.

Tomorrow we are probably going to play Heroscape for something different. Wink

LOL... we were playing version 2, which had the mystery ending. You selected a mystery card (had a question mark on it) at the beginning of the game and the first person to reach the center of the board turned it over and saw what their task was to win the game. DH let me win (and he really did, he should have won but he let me get to the center first) and when I turned over the card it said, 'You find a magic ring. With it you can marry any other player and win the game.' Of course, DH was the only other person playing. Wink

After that he did the get down on one knee thing, but I still have the note. Luvu2

DH is NOT a romantic guy, so this really pulled out the stops for him.

He was a toad FOUR times? You would think he would have learned not to roll the dice on those mystery people or temples. In Version 2 they had lead miniatures you could buy and paint, and they even had one for the toad. It was pretty cool, and almost made it worth being a toad. ALMOST.

DH LOVED the Prophetess. She was always his favourite character. I liked the Minstrel. I still haven't picked a favourite for this version though.

LOL! The first time (we had basically just started the game) he went to the Enchantress and I warned him about what could happen. Sure enough, he rolled a 1 and became a Toad. Then his Dwarf got the Witch card and he rolled a 1 and became a TOAD. Course all of his stuff, followers and gold (which he had a lot of at that point) were on the same square as the Witch now. He kept going back to try to encounter the Witch (so he could get his stuff back) but when he did he kept getting turned into a Toad.

I forgot to add, my Warrior was 'staked to the gills' with objects and followers when my wife (playing the Wizard) cast Random on me and I rolled a 1 - I became a Toad and she eventually landed on my previous square and got all of my stuff. That was her revenge for me attacking her and taking her Talisman. Wink

Oh, terrible luck. AT that point, it's better just to leave her alone. LOL Do you HAVE to encounter the witch, though? I thought that was one of the cards that said you MAY visit the witch. I don't recall. I get so confused. I've played 3 different versions of this game...

As for stealing Talismans, that's truly nasty. You don't NEED to do that. Just go to the wizard in the second region and get a quest. Simple. I think your wife did the right thing!!!!!!!! Wink

Heh heh, when we play these sort of games we tend to be pretty cutthroat about it. Alliances are often made and broken during the course of play. Wink

You should see us play Zombies. Course we are thinking of adding a house rule in Zombies that allow you to attack other characters (not just zombies). *evil grin*
