Red Impulse/Col Cronus

Whatever you want to call him I am after info on him for something I am currently writing.

I am not trying to be entirely cannon but I do want to try to understand his character a little more.

Can anyone help?

What specifically do you want to know, FB?

Personally, I hate RI and that leaks over to Cronus for me. I think RI's a terrible father who has to beat up on his son to feel good about himself. Even when Ken was 4, he was drowning him in the lake. Ugh.

SJ, OTOH, seems to like Cronus a lot and writes him nicely into her fics. Perhaps she could give you a more positive viewpoint (which, I suspect, is what you were looking for).

To be honest more Cronus than his Gatch incarnation.

Just want to ensure I have the right feel for him before writing something in a fic.

Cant be more specific otherwise I will give away whats coming Tongue

Well honestly, I've seen his character painted in different ways. In BOTP there isn't much disclosed about him, so I think you could go whichever way you want. The only consistency is the way he left his family and pretended to be dead to protect them while he worked undercover.

Ahhh Cronus - How I do love him muchly ...

I'm trying to think of who he compares to, but really can't quite find anyone off hand.

The comics did a good job of CC. He was less of a prick than RI, probably more like .... um ... Gosh so hard to explain when I'm on the tail-end of the worst hang over of my life ...

If it can hang until tomorrow when I'm more lucid and able to type ... I'll give you something a little better to play with ...

No problem SJ. I can probably find some poems to do. I am sure people at the clubhouse will wait for the next instalment. Wink

Well he left his family when Ken was four years old, he faked his death in a plane crash.

Ken never really believed that he was dead though and has looked for his signs that his father was still alive.

Character;
He was a very militant man, who treated Ken like a soldier . So his relationship with Ken was not affectionate. He disaplined Ken like a he would a subordinate, not a as a loving father would a son.

Though it did affect him at the time that he did it, I think he felt he needed to toughen Ken because his son was a fighter and Gatchaman.

You know.."Wake up to yourself boy, go find her and stop mopping around here feeling sorry for yourself, get some balls and get back to work." kinda thing(not politically correct, but then Gatch was not a politically correct show...1971 before someone introduced that way of thinking.)

Although Ken at times did lash out in a similar way with the team when it came to disapline, he tended to have more compassion than his father, and a more affectionate side to his personality,It is less likley that Ken would abandon his family like his father did.

Although Red Impulse showed signs of loving his only child through his commitment to his mission, and sacrific of his own life.

When it came down to it RI in ways had a lot of regret at leaving his wife and son to go on this mission, but to him it was his way of protecting them.

Red Impulse was not alone but he was the leader of a squadron Masaki and Oniishi were his two other pilots that ran missions with him. Nothing was know about them personally, or their previous lives, they were a mystery.

He ran his secret base from an island (It was planet Riga on BOTP)the team went on a training mission there.

It was indicated that he may have lived for a time with his family in another country(I can't remember the name off hand), or they went on vacation there.

Ken was familiar with the place on a mission and it was were his father found out about the Van Allen belt project that Galcator was working on. His father did a sucide run with the V-2 rocket.

Anyway that is off the cuff and my interpretation, and I can get better info for you later if you want more...I have to go to bed now...

The country was Hontworl. The same country was used as the 'base' for Galactor in the OAVs. (Solaris impersonated their leader and withdrew from the UN, forming his own military alliance).

Oniishi (I believe) was dumb, because Galactor had tortured him when he was younger and cut out his tongue.

Oh yeah, you forgot RI's penchant for looking like Ricardo Montalban when off duty! Wink

Here's another tidbit... in BOTP there's a scene where Mark is at a grave and he says 'brother'... implying that he had a brother who died. They never follow up on this. Of course, it's actually Ken at RI's grave, but since in BOTP Cronus didn't die in the Van Allen Belt missile (he was able to eject in time), they couldn't use that. In BOTP Cronus died off camera, and Zoltar mocked Mark with it during an encounter late in the series. Mark was shocked to hear about it.

mmm I had thought of that after about Onishii, but then I was tired when I wrote that last night, and didn't have notes to refer to...

I did forget the name of the country that he my have "lived" in as a child with his parents...I was going to look that up in an ep when I do my ficcie for the end of fighter...so much information to remember...I have more though about him...just ran out of time to type it up!

I had thoughts on doing my own character profiles of all of them, and putting together info as I found it about then, names of places etc, just so I would have it on hand..Sigh!

I remember Mark having a brother in BOTP...
But it is fun to watch an EP just to find out about it!

Ricardo Montalbant....Don't know him, that's why I didn't think of him...hehehehe
