My cockatiels - bad news

Some of you might remember me posting a pic of my birdies a while back. Well, things have gone badly over the last 2 and a half weeks.

Because I was going on holiday and leaving the birds with a relative, I decided to get their wings clipped. The relatives have 3 teenage kids who're not guaranteed to remember to shut doors, and Mildred had flown into a window here so hard that she'd had to spend a day at the vet's. So I though cutting down their flying ability would be a good thing.

So, Mildred died at the vets of shock while having her wings done. And George escaped from the relative's house on Saturday evening, just as we were on our way to visit. We got there and a neighbour told us they could hear him in a tree across the road. So we all ran over and my brother in law climbed up the tree but couldn't get close enough. And George eventually flew off over 300 metres straight flight into some woodland.

So I don't know if he'll turn up again or whether he's lost for ever as well.

This has left me rather sad. George was a nice bird.

After Mildred died I found a local breeder of green-cheeked conures (because the ones in the local pet shop are so sweet). So I've put a deposit down on one of those and I'm going to pick her up at the start of september when I've finished going on all these holidays. Since I can't assume George is going to turn up alive, or at all, I'm going to try to put down a deposit on one of the other baby birds he's got so that the one I'm already getting won't be lonely all day.

Oh thats sad.

Have you gone in the woods to listen for george? cockatiels have a very distinctive call.

If he is used to you he might go looking for you.

However if a cockatiel cuts loose seriously its gone forever, they are notorious in that respect.

They live miles away from where I do. Since he'd already been with them for 2 weeks, I'd hoped he'd come to their calls too. We could all hear him (but not see him at all) when he was in the tree, but he was just too scared to come down. Their teenage kids have said they'll go to the woods and look for him, and they're putting notices round and an ad in the paper, and notifying the RSPCA in case anyone finds him. But I can't see him allowing someone to catch him, and the only way we'll get him back is if he turns up in someone's garden and lets them pick him up.

I really don't think we have much chance of getting him back. It's a real shame because he's a friendly, personable, gentle bird, and I hate to think of what could happen to him out in the big world. The only positive is that at least it's not winter and he'll be able to find food for himself.

So is he gone for good now?

That is sad, they are so used to being loved by humans that they would come to someone for food...

I hope your does!

Oh Meridian I am so sorry.

I hope George either comes back on his own to your relative or is found by a nice person who returns him to you.

Huggles

Well, I've now arranged to buy a 2nd bird from the guy I'm buying the conure from. So if George turns up he'll have 2 new birds to chirp at instead of 1. And if he doesn't turn up, I won't have a sad, lonely bird sitting by itself waiting for company. I've been pretty miserable for the last couple of days so at least I have something to look forward to.

Anyway, this is what the new birds will look like
Aqua:

Jinpei: (it just seems to be the right name for it pound )

Meridian so sad to hear about the loss of your two friends.
Love the names of the new ones.

I am minus a dog right now, due to the work in my house. So I know how it feels to be without a beloved pet around. No pitter patter of feet or little doggy barks during doggy dreams, or in your case flapping of wings and twitering of songs. (Yeah, my dog barks/whimpers in her sleep.)

I am sorry to hear about your 2 birds Meridian.

Earlier this year, my nan's cat disappeared and someone thought that they saw the cat dead in their back garden. Nobody was sure but we assume it was the cat as she never came back.
