CG Gatchaman Movie Announces Scriptwriter

Hello all!

Wendy Dinsmore forwarded some information regarding the CG Gatchaman movie that came from a press release Imagi released yesterday, the PDF file for which can be found here:

http://www.imagi.com.hk/pdf2/IMAGI_Robert-Mark-Kamen_061307.pdf

For those who don't wish to download the file, I'll copy the information at the end of this note.

At least something is happening on that front!

James

**************

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ROBERT MARK KAMEN TO WRITE
NEW gGATCHAMANh FILM

Los Angeles, June 13, 2007 - Robert Mark Kamen has been signed to write the screenplay for the upcoming CG-animated motion picture Gatchaman, it was jointly announced today by Imagi Studios Co-CEO & Chief Creative Officer Francis Kao and Co-CEO Douglas E. Glen.

Kamen will work closely on Gatchaman with producer Lynne Southerland and director Kevin Munroe (TMNT). Scheduled for completion in late 2008, Gatchaman will expand the visual boundaries of CG animation through dynamic camera work and action sequences.

gImagi is breaking exciting new ground in the animation industry by making big action movies in pure computer graphics. It is a privilege to be working with such an innovative team of artists,h Kamen said.

A veteran writer who has authored 18 produced feature films since 1979, Kamenfs credits include Taps, The Karate Kid and its sequels, A Walk in the Clouds, The Power of One, Lethal Weapon 3, The Professional, The Fifth Element, Kiss of the Dragon, Bandidas, the Transporter movies and the upcoming Taken, starring Liam Neeson. Kamen has enjoyed a writing partnership with the prolific French producer and director Luc Besson for 14 years.

gWe are thrilled to have Robert on the Gatchaman team. His commitment to creating strong characters, as well as his vast experience in the action genre, make him a perfect fit for this groundbreaking animated movie,h Southerland said.

Based on the successful Japanese anime franchise created by Tatsuo Yoshida (Speed Racer) in 1972, Gatchaman revolves around a team of five young superhero ninjas who must save the world from alien occupation. With over 200 TV episodes, Gatchaman has delighted fans around the world for more than 30 years. The propertyfs popularity in the U.S. stems from domestic versions of the show, including Battle of the Planets and G-Force.

Bolding is mine ...

To be a whiney snicker-puss for a minute ...

Wasn't gatchman about terrorism? They didn't fight aliens ... That was Battle of the Planets, wasn't it?

Of course I could be wrong - I found the dubbing too painful, and rarely wore my glasses while reading the subtitles ... So I may have missed it.

I think the OAV incorporated alien stuff ... Did it? Uh, it's been an while ...

Anyway - so excited about this! I was telling Flash last night that they were doing a movie and he HAD to get it for me when it comes out.

He was less than impressed - although he prefers Gatch over BotP ...

I want to thank you muchly for keeping us up to date here. You are da BOMB!

Tho - I gotto admit ... I was kinda rooting for Springie or TJ to get called up for writing duties ... <wink>

I guess they don't like the smut, eh girls?

LOL!

Thanks again ... I am so excited about this.

You are right, BOTP was about aliens taking over the world, while Gatchaman was about an organisation that wanted to destroy the world, but they would be the only humans left on the planet.

I think the OAV was virtually the same plot as Gatchaman.

Actually, it was only the OAV that featured that particular plot element. In the TV series, Gallactor was out to rule the world, not destroy it (At least not until the end of the series, when X decided to destroy the planet and return to space in order to find out what happened to his homeworld. And even then, it was only X who wanted to do this, while his human underlings had no idea what his real intention was).

I noticed that "alien occupation" comment too.

Yes, you're right, the alien aspect is of BotP origins, not Gatchaman. I'm hoping that this is nothing more than the writer of the press release screwing up, not an indication that the people directly involved are mixing up the two versions.

I'm not sure I'd say that Gatchaman was about terrorism. Gallactor may have used some tactics that are now associated with terrorism, but at the time, acts that we would now call terrorism were not necessarially thought of by that label.

Rather than being called a terrorist group, much of the early promotional material for the first series referred to Gallactor as a "Secret Society." If you think about it, Gallactor is more akin to a group of evil villains from a 1940s movie serial (With a much bigger budget than those groups had) than a terrorist group. They'd have been right at home in a Commando Cody, Flash Gordon, or Captain Marvel slugfest.

:snort!:

Oh I am so not on that list ....

Ahh, see I am so darn one-sided that the only thing I can actually write is smut - If you're looking for action outside-a-da-bedroom, I'm unable to do that.

I basically suck ass at action. I tried it, I failed ... I can always imagine the fight scenes and what-not, but cannot seem to get the flow right ... I'm always too damn worried about the descriptive shit.

I guess that's why I write the sexy stuff ...

:sings: I'm a lover - not a fighter ....

LOL!

Thanks Tatso,

That is just soooo exciting. I hope they do a good job...

SJ you may get some smut still, in movies these days they are likely too, send them some of your fics for ideas on how it's done!(I like your smut and TJ's)

So will they still have the swan in a mini skirt do you think?

I Suppose they maybe refering to Sosai X he was alien....They may have decided to combine it a bit with BOTP story, most Americans would know that over Gatch I suppose.

Smoochies
