Warning: this rant may contain politically incorrect rantings!

So my daughter and I took BART into the city today to visit a supposedly amazing fabric shop, Britex. After hiking up Powell street to Geary, we had a ten minute wait for the shop to open (in the city near perfect timing). However, we were soon to be verbally assaulted by one of San Francisco's more unique psuedo-celebrities.

This person, who can only be described as gender queer, 3-inch wedge heels, Daisy Dukes, cropped top complete with falsies, beard, bright/neon fuchsia lipstick, and blond pony-tail wig, comes to join the queue waiting to get into the store. The first thing he says to us is "I'm a hooker! Have you ever met a hooker before?" He then proceeds to add random things: I'm drunk, I've done crack, I'm famous, I'm a fashion designer, I'm a rock star. All the time trying to get me to engage in conversation, not noticing that my brief, polite responses say I don't want to converse. When I finally tell him he is making me uncomfortable, he starts ranting, calling me "a fat fucking bitch" over and over, saying people like me are ruining the world.

He was so bad, another person in the queue came over to make sure we were all right.

Needless to say fabric shopping was uncomfortable. I could have lived with the long, narrow, claustrophobic store, but it seemed like this person was following us around (despite the fact that this person struck me as an attention whore, I want to think that the following us around was coincidence based on the store layout and not any real maliciousness). At least he did not saying anything to us in the store.

I suspect that in addition to being gender queer, he is also either a functioning schizophrenic or extremely manic bipolar, of course he could also be a rare, self-aware form of borderline personality disorders. Since he regularly bragged about how famous he was, I had to check. Evidently, he has been the subject of two SF Gate articles, one a feature on the transgender community in SF and the other detailing how he got a bartender fired for refusing to serve him (I feel for the poor bloke that lost his job because of this creep!)

I doubt I'll be heading back to Britex anytime soon. The store was neat and worth visiting, but too pricy and closed in to be a comfortable shopping spot.

We did have a highlight though! Immediately upon leaving the fabric store we stopped in at Macy's Union Square. I think it is the biggest Macy's after the original in New York. I'm not a big fan of Macy's, Sears and Penny's are more my style (I really miss Ford's and Leasks which are only known to those from Santa Cruz or San Benito Counties), but I know love this particular store. It provided open space to browse when I needed it the most. They had Christmas decor up to look at, and think how much trouble I could get in. But most of all they had a Cheesecake Factory! I've wanted to try that place for awhile now, and it proved to be a great dining experience, great food, friendly service, and not outrageous prices. I've spent as much or more at a local favorite.

And while it started off a disappointing trip, it was not a complete waste. Getting off BART a stop early and we stopped at Joann's and got everything we needed for three projects, even though we only went looking for one. That and I got four yards of fabric for the price Nicole paid for 1/2 yard in SF (faux fur is pricier than fleece, but not that much!)

So apologies to all members of the LGBTQ community, apologies to those struggling with mental illness. I promise I'll do my best not to let my interaction with this poor example of a person affect my opinions of the rest of you. Though, I might not make that promise extend to Bubble's johns. At lunch we laughed over how desperate they must be. I don't see any woman or self-respecting gay man paying for his services. They must be high on meth, Ex, or crack, or all three.

My apologies to anyone who needs eye bleach or Puke3 after reading this.

No group is immune from jerks and a-holes. I belong to one of those groups (the mental disorder group--I've been diagnosed with major depression, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder AND adult ADHD), and I resent it when people seem to think that being a member of a marginalized group means that this protects them from being responsible for their actions. The brain chemistry may be out of whack, but you're still responsible for what you say and do. IMHO, it's just as stigmatizing for people to use their status as a crutch as it is for someone who doesn't have it to pass judgement on me without knowing a thing about my conditions and how they actually work.

In other words, I'm not offended by your rant and I'm sorry you had to go through that.

I'm in agreement with MsAnn. An asshole is an asshole regardless of their gender identity and diagnoses. Smile

What's the betting if you had complained about him, he would yell "Bigot" and claim discrimination of some kind?

The sad thing is if someone of the now protected groups feels threatened, they came scream bloody murder and get satisfaction - example being the poor bartender who was fired - but it they make some not a member of their group uncomfortable, we can't act upon because we are accused of being bigots, racists, religious zealots, etc. Nothing like a two way standard.
